Nothing says 'tough' like a well-preserved throwback SUV. This 1983
Jeep Cherokee Laredo Wide Track comes decked out in Deep Night Blue
exterior paint stretched out over its larger fenders and wider
axles. With its vertical-bar grille, roof rack, and polished chrome
trim, this rugged AMC-built truck is ready for an off-road romp or
casual cruise along the beach whenever you are.
Inside, we find a more upscale black and grey Laredo cloth trim. A
pair of bucket seats are separated by a center armrest, while a
three-spoke, power-assisted wheel features the iconic Jeep logo.
Just beyond the column shifter sits a three-pod gauge cluster,
housed inside a shimmering brushed-aluminum instrument bezel and
next to a set of easy-to-use HVAC controls. A modern
AM/FM/Satellite Kenwood head unit offers Bluetooth connectivity,
allowing for a significantly greater number of soundtrack options
than the unit it replaces. Heat, air conditioning, a defroster, and
a rear defogger ensure the cabin remains comfortable, regardless of
the season.
Under the hood, we find a big 360 cubic-inch overhead valve V-8
engine. When new, this motor, equipped with its two-barrel
carburetor, pumped out approximately 175 horsepower and 280
pound-feet of torque. Spent gases are expelled through a
dual-to-single exhaust and a single aftermarket muffler. Power is
routed through a A727 Torqueflite three-speed automatic
transmission before being sent to either the rear or all four
corners, thanks to its four-wheel drive setup, which utilizes
hardcore manually locking front hubs to engage.
