Ask any group of classic Mustang enthusiasts which of the model's
early offerings was the most visually pleasing, and you're bound to
hear a lot of them reply without hesitation that the
first-generation fastback takes that honor. When it was first
released, its clean, flowing lines and lean but robust overall size
couldn't help but attract attention. This 1966 Ford Mustang Shelby
GT350H Tribute is an outstanding example of the model in upgraded
Shelby form. It features high-impact black paint with accurately
rendered gold stripes, creating a magnetic color combination, while
its louvered rear window and side scoops provide a well-deserved
shout-out to its top-tier counterparts. Take a closer look and
you'll appreciate the craftsmanship that went into the
modifications. This is a great-looking fastback.
Climb inside and you'll appreciate the overall quality of the black
vinyl interior. The bucket seats are in good shape, with no tears
or loose seams, and they're bracketed by door panels that are in
matching condition. The dashboard shows no cracking, which is
always a welcome find in a car with black upholstery, and the
headliner is still nice and snug. In the back, the sport deck rear
seat folds and unfolds with ease, creating either additional
seating or storage space at your choosing. You'll find a set of
Rally Pac gauges perched on the steering column to monitor
conditions on the road, and an aftermarket AM/FM/CD stereo is on
hand to provide the soundtrack for your road-bound adventures.
Beneath the scooped hood, you'll find a period-correct
289-cubic-inch V8, an engine that gained a well-deserved reputation
for reliability, with many still on the road today. True to form,
it starts right up and idles smoothly and is outfitted with an
aluminum Edelbrock intake manifold, shorty headers, and a Holley
4-barrel carburetor to up its power. Its dual exhaust terminates in
a pair of Flowmaster mufflers, so this fastback has a deep, but not
overpowering, exhaust note. It also has strong road manners. It
tracks nicely as it cruises on its set of 14" wheels outfitted with
Cooper Cobra tires, and its 3-speed manual transmission shifts
without issue.
