The LT option was touted by Chevrolet as combining luxury and
touring and including an upgraded interior package. "You can move
into a handsome Sport Coupe for less money than you might imagine.
If you really want to go bananas you can add spoilers and those
bold new Z28 hood and deck stripes. There's a third approach,
comfortably in between. Camaro Type LT with its sumptuous interior
and other elegant touches." From a 1974 print ad.
For consignment, a 1974 Chevrolet Camaro Type LT showing 46,882
miles, but the true miles are unknown. This is a one owner car,
always garage kept, and get this, it has its numbers matching
engine under the hood!
Exterior
Our consignor tells us this is the original coat of single stage
Bright Blue and it's clean and presents as it would have in 1974
with almost no blemishes at all. Everything else is amazingly crisp
on the car as well, including the polished trim, the emblems and
the light lenses which, especially in the back, tend to oxidize
over the years. The grille has been replaced for a clean look and
lacks the red, white, and blue crest that appeared on '74 Camaros.
14-inch Chevrolet Sport wheels look right at home with the white
letters of the 225/70R14's out on display, consistent with 70's
trends. Imperfections are limited to a slight indentation to the
paint at a wheel opening and an area of bubbling paint on a
horizontal surface that looks like something may have dripped on
it.
Interior
Black vinyl combines with striped cloth first on the clean door
panels, then on the bucket seats up front and rear 2+2's and it's
essentially in showroom condition. A Type LT badge is dead center
in the four spoke steering wheel, also in great condition, and the
LT package brings in a simulated burlwood faceplate to the sporty
instrument cluster, replete with analog gauges and of course, the
requisite clock. Wood adorns the AM/FM radio and inspired the wood
housing of the added gauges below the dash. The transmission tunnel
houses the floor shifter for the 4-speed and its cleanly based in a
rubber boot and polished trim ring over clean black carpet and
matching mats. The trunk is the only thing that shows a touch of
age with the vinyl mat showing use but the space saver spare still
in place!
Drivetrain
Sure, the reservoir bottle has yellowed a bit over time, but the
rest of the engine is clean. This is the numbers matching 350ci L48
V8 with 185 horsepower and a 4-barrel carburetor. Behind it, a
Saginaw 4-speed manual transmission which routes power the 10 bolt
rear axle.
Undercarriage
Minimal surface rust, some residual oil on the pans and rear
differential, and some dry bushings are the only things that veer
from a squeaky clean underside. Dual exhaust run through a stock
style muffler and exit rather modestly under the car through two
tailpipes. Power brakes are onboard as disc in front and drum in
the rear while suspension includes coil springs up front and leaf
springs in back.
Drive-Ability
We step into this blue time capsule and set off onto the test loop
and now we're not only impressed with its cosmetic preservation,
but mechanical as well. The car runs like it's 1974 and we fully
expect to hear "Let me be there" being sung by Olivia Newton John
when we turn on the radio, but alas, we're still in 2025 so no good
songs come across. But we digress, because the car has good power,
tracks straight, and shifts smoothly as can be. Our little clock
that's part of the instrument cluster is not working, it's still
stuck in 1974, but all other functions on this survivor operate as
they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
More than 150,000 Camaros were built in 1974 and would you believe
this is only the second we've had the honor to represent at the
mall. Why? Because these cars were generally used and put away wet
or modified into extinction. Here's one of the nicest original
examples you're going to find and if it wasn't so fun to drive,
we'd say put this thing in a museum, and that's certainly an
option, but so is preserving it in a private collection and taking
it out to shows. It's fantastic!
