At a time when the country was embattled with major issues and
turmoil, the late 60's turned out to be an outstanding period in
the automotive world with several destined to be legends being born
from U.S. factories. This is when manufacturers went all out with
the production of muscle cars and pony cars with ongoing efforts to
push the limits. Among these giants, there were the more pedestrian
versions that served more as commuter and family cars, which
retained design cues from the memorable monsters.
For consignment, a 1969 Plymouth Barracuda convertible with a title
verified 69,023 actual miles. You're looking at a rare model, only
1,442 Barracuda convertibles were made in 1969 and only 245 of them
were born with the 225ci six cylinder engine. This is one of
them.
Exterior
A better than new shine now reflects off the car with two stage
Scorch Red paint blanketing its smooth panels, contrasted by the
flawless black canvas top and its glass window. There's also a
smooth flat back on the decklid panel, framed in polished trim with
a call out for Barracuda and the very cool fish emblem. The rear
valance holds the reverse lights in polished housing under a laser
straight bumper while up front, the pattern of framed black grilles
over a straight bumper illustrates some fine design work and it's
all in remarkable condition. 14-inch black steel wheels keep the
color coordination going with dog dish hubcaps and white wall
205/75R14 tires with a mid 2019 date code. There's nothing we could
pinpoint on the exterior that's an imperfection, it's showroom
clean.
Interior
Black vinyl door cards present with some sheen and especially on
the passenger side, some uneven tucks have created some pleating,
but both doors are clean and intact. Grain vinyl is used on the
bucket seats with tuck and roll inserts in the vinyl and the
pattern is repeated on the back bench and they are in excellent
condition and are set in a base of low pile black carpet with 'Cuda
branded mats with red writing on black. We note the backing of the
passenger side bucket is loose. The standard steering wheel, pencil
thin by today's standards, shows a touch of patina but no cracks,
and leads to the simple instrument panel with a speedometer and a
four gauge array contained in the right dial. The metallic mid
panel takes in the AM radio under the vent levers and the fish
makes another appearance on the glovebox. The trunk is lined with
the typical plaid vinyl mat and presents cleanly.
Drivetrain
We open the hood to find a clean engine bay housing a 225ci slant
six cylinder with a Holley 2-barrel carburetor. Other than the
aluminum radiator, the engine presents as original including
factory style headers, and the inner fenders are dressed in clean
red paint. An A904 3-speed automatic transmission is mated to the
engine and routes power to the 7 inch rear axle.
Undercarriage
Driver quality conditions are found underneath with plenty of
surface rust, a few spots of rust through on body braces and inner
rockers, some filler in the wheel well, and oil that coats the
engine bottom, drifts along the right exhaust pipe with blow back,
and some is also seen on the rear differential. The exhaust splits
into two from the engine and each wears a stainless steel muffler
on its way to the back where it exits discreetly under the car.
Drum brakes are at each wheel and suspension is noted as torsion
bar in front and leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
We're thrilled to take this rarefish out onto the test loop where
the slant six performs in fine fashion with adequate power and a
smooth idle. The car tracks straight, handles well, and the drum
brakes perform when called upon. We find all functions on the
Barracuda are in good working order. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
When you make your show signage, be sure to mention that this is
one of 245 six cylinder convertible 1969 Barracudas. That's just
icing on the cake for a car with a spectacular top side that could
have easily just left the showroom, especially if a clear coat
would have been used in '69. You're likely not to see another one
at the show, even if that's an all Mopar car show. If you do, be
sure to exchange phone numbers as you're both part of an elite
ownership club. But let's make it yours first, you know our phone
number.
