"It'll put butterflies in your stomach, a lump in your throat and a
smile on your face. It's exciting, it's virile, it's a legend.
Owning and driving a Z28 is a rare experience enjoyed most by those
who enjoy driving the most. Exclusive to Z28 are the louvers in the
front fenders and the simulated air scoop in the hood." From the
1978 Camaro brochure. The Z28 was available in 11 colors with 9
accent stripe combinations.
For consignment, a 1978 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with a title verified
81,997 actual miles, now with a Blueprint 355ci V8 that puts out
399.71 horsepower on a dyno. It's got some old school cosmetic mods
but also comes with its original hood and wheels if you want to go
back to a more stock appearance.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
Bright Blue covers most of the car and is augmented by a wide white
stripe in front that we suspect continues on the stock hood, and a
double stripe in back that travels over the rear spoiler to face
followers. The hood in place is an unpainted cowl hood with a
Blueprint emblem on the rise. The car lacks the side stripe package
and Z28 call outs but provides a clean profile emboldened by
15-inch American Racing Torque Thrust wheels and even with equal
sized tires on each wheel, the car has a slightly raked stance. The
chrome tips are blued which creates a nice match with the paint
while up front, the headlights are LED upgrades. Imperfections on
the outside include some touched up chipped bumper corners, various
cracks and scratches in the paint, and one area with some minor
bubbling.
Interior
A swing of the door reveals GM's smartly designed black vinyl door
panels with stitch patterns and the armrest/door pull combo used in
millions of cars over many years. A crank for the window and
speakers in the corners also reside on the door panel. Sporty black
bucket seats present nicely and both front and back have accent
buttons on the upper portions, a 70's mainstay. The stock rope
wrapped steering wheelshows some age so a neoprene cover is onboard
in matching colors leading to the factory gauge cluster in a
textured aluminum face plate, all in good shape. In the center, an
aftermarket AM/FM/CD player and a storage bin which is connected to
the center console that hugs the transmission tunnel and houses the
GM shifter and this area is also in very nice condition. Low pile
black carpet is protected by black and blue rubber mats, the
headliner shows some typical lumps and bumps but is intact, and the
trunk looks like it did when it left the factory.
Drivetrain
Under the hood and fitting nicely is a 355ci V8 with a Holley
4-barrel carburetor which is dyno proven good for 399.71
horsepower. It's mated to a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission
sending power to the 10 bolt rear axle. Headers being the exhaust
process. Finned valve covers and chrome add some eye-catching
componentry to the bay.
Undercarriage
We'll call it driver quality underneath with plenty of patina and
surface rust and areas of flaking invasive rust on bottom metal.
Frame braces have been added to each side. Dual exhaust travels
through Ravin mufflers on their way to the blued chrome tips out
back. There are no catalytic converters on board. This car is
equipped with four wheel power disc brakes. Suspension consists of
coil springs up front, leaf springs in the back and the addition of
new QA1 shocks, rear sway bar, and bushings.
Drive-Ability
A turn of the key and four barrels delivers fuel to spark the 355
to life and we're immediately impressed with the exhaust, and the
seats are pretty good too! On the test loop, the Camaro does what
good F-bodies do, handle well through turns and with four wheel
disc brakes, this one stops on a dime. Good thing, because there's
plenty of power underfoot and this car pulls through straight
aways. Of note, things that don't work, and that include the horn,
wipers, radio, tach, and left turn signal. Outside of that, all
functions operate. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Kids of the 80's are now adults of the new century and look back
fondly when Firebirds and Camaros were the cars to have and they
roamed the street as souped up cruisers and pedestrian daily
drivers. This car made it through the decades and lives to tell the
story of those times, and now you can relive them with this Sport
Coupe Camaro with the coveted Z28 option.
