"Hundreds of thousands of people now own and drive Ford V8 cars.
Some neighbor or friend of yours has one. If we told you what we
think of the car, you might say we are prejudiced, so we let the
car and its owner tell you. The 1934 car is even better than the
1933, and that was our best car up to its time. The new car is more
beautiful, faster, more powerful, gives more miles to the gallon,
better oil economy, is easier riding, cheaper to own and operate
than any car we ever built. The Ford V8 will tell you its own
story." From a 1934 print ad.
For consignment, a 1934 Ford Model 40 pickup showing 1,127 miles,
but the true miles are unknown. This street rod version of a 91
year old truck has some go-fast goodies, modern suspension, and a
lowered profile that would win just about any game of limbo.
Exterior
The body, bed, and grille shell have been treated to modern two
stage gold paint and this hot little nugget wears it well. Let's
examine the back where polished hardware on the tailgate is a stand
out and the Moon fuel tank in the bed is as well. Wide honey
colored glossy wood lines that bed are interspersed with polished
bed rails that are as attractive as they are purposeful. Curved on
the bottom, the chopped windshield can be pivoted and is topped
with a visor at the end of a slightly bulbous roof. Up front,
headlights that look suspended in mid air flank the grille while
exposed brake and suspension components add to the exterior's
appeal and interest, and it's all in fantastic condition. 16-inch
SoCal Kidney Bean wheels in dramatically different widths carry
staggered tires and give the car a tasteful rake, almost
imperceptible.
Interior
Gray pleated vinyl door panels set the interior palette and are a
nice mix with the gold. A few scuffs are seen on the driver's door
but otherwise a clean presentation. Inside, low buckets, also in
gray vinyl, hug the floor and are in good condition. A simple two
spoke steering wheel leads to the body keyed dashboard housing
black faced AutoMeter gauges while electric switches and toggles
are situated to the left of the wheel. The floor mounted shifter
bends its way up and gray carpet covers the floor with pleated gray
vinyl covering the kick panels and the ceiling above. All clean
inside and we can't wait to take this one for a lap!
Drivetrain
Out for all to see is a fantastic 382ci V8, a consignor stated
371ci V8 bored .060 over, equipped with Ross Racing aluminum heads
and three 2-barrel rebuilt carburetors. Offenhauser finned valve
covers top the powerplant and Lake style headers with barrels
extend like wings to the sides. A 3-speed manual from a 1948 to
1952 Ford truck is behind the engine and sends power to the Strange
carrier Ford 9" rear and 3.91 gears in the Currie housing. Disc
brakes are hidden in finned Buick drums up front while drums reside
in the back.
Undercarriage
Very very clean underneath with lots of polished components and
black paint with satin sheen throughout. Suspension employed
includes a transverse leaf spring at each end with SoCal split
front wishbone up front and Pete and Jakes ladder bars in the back.
It is rust and dirt free underneath and we note just a single drop
of oil on the flywheel cover.
Drive-Ability
It's a good thing we stick to the confines of Classic Auto Mall's
property otherwise Morgantown might not have enough chiropractors
to deal with all the rubbernecking if we drove through town! Plus,
we don't want to upset the bovine around with the sound of this
amazing car, which is substantial. The car has more power than
you're likely to use on your way to the car show, but it's nice to
know it's there. You sit legs outstretched which isn't much
different from your Corvette or other sports car. Despite the chop,
there's plenty of window coverage for good visibility. We note the
horn, wiper, and tachometer are not working but all other functions
operate. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Maybe other investments didn't pan out, but you just hit the
motherlode with this carefully sculpted gold Ford. Stake a claim to
this one because it's one of a kind and checks all the boxes for an
ultra cool, show stealing ride. It's an absolute gem.
Classic Auto Mall is home to more than 1,000 classic and
