The El Camino was a direct challenge to Ford's Ranchero, a utility
coupe dominating a previously untapped market. GM flirted with
coupe type trucks such as the Chevrolet Cameo Carrier and the GMC
Suburban Carrier in 1955, but they went all in with the El Camino
for the 1959 model year. After dropping the axe on the original
model GM decided to bring it back in 1964 as version 2 which lasted
until 1967.
For consignment, a 1964 Chevrolet El Camino pickup showing 48,276
miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car is in original
condition with newer paint in the original color applied in 2023
and some interior refurbishing as well. We've represented dozens of
El Caminos over the years but this is only the second 1964 and this
one is a doozie!
Exterior
Now in two stage Almond Fawn paint, the exterior is augmented with
Desert Beige on the cabin roof and B-pillar. The simplicity of the
grille, quad headlights and straight front bumper is spectacular
and it all presents in excellent condition. As we swing to the
back, tail lights contour and repeat the shape of the metal around
it, a design detail that is worthy of a trophy on its own.
Meanwhile, more clean chrome on the rear bumper and on the two
exhaust tips that protrude past it. The bed was not repainted,
according to our consignor, but is in very nice shape, shows a
touch of use and has a few dings. The trim around the window is
consistent with the metalwork on the car and by that we mean mighty
fine and the 15-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels are like four cherries
on top, each wrapped in white wall tires. The only imperfection is
some evidence of filler under the left tail light.
Interior
Inside, we have a combination of restored elements, new pieces such
as the case with the handsome door panels, and unrestored original
components. The split bench seat, in Medium Fawn, combines retied
springs, new foam, factory vinyl covers, and original chrome side
bars, and it all looks great. The restored original steering wheel
fronts a new chrome gauge cluster with new or rebuilt gauges and
along with the AM/FM/Cassette radio, is ready for show. New OEM
carpet floods the floors with knit tan perfection and is topped by
clear plastic floor mats, just like your grandfather had, with the
appropriate yellowing. The stitched headliner is tight and intact
and shows just blemishes as does one of the new visors. Overall,
about as close to showroom fresh as you'll find.
Drivetrain
The show continues under the hood where a 283ci L77 V8 resides with
high compression heads and an output of 220 horsepower, fueled by a
4-barrel carburetor and expelling spent gas through factory
optioned hi performance manifolds. The bay is spotless and the
engine has chrome valve covers and air filter case along with a
bright orange painted block. A Powerglide 2-speed automatic is
behind it sending power to the 10 bolt rear.
Undercarriage
This is what you might call a tabletop undercarriage, because you
can practically eat off it. Dual exhaust finds their way to
glasspack style mufflers, then head to the back to exit via chrome
tips. Four wheel power drum brakes are on board and suspension
consists of coil springs up front and a 4 link with coil springs in
back. Clean black surfaces and an oil free environment create a
fine looking belly.
Drive-Ability
A pump of the gas and a turn of the key and the 283 fires up and
sounds great doing it. A flick of the column shifter and we're in
Drive and circling our test loop with good power, straight
tracking, fantastic visibility, and braking on demand. This well
sorted car does everything well and all functions operate as they
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
More than 30,000 El Caminos were made in 1964 but when was the last
time you saw one? They were likely used and put away wet and not
many survive. This is one stunner of an example, an absolute show
stopper, and if you're an El Camino junkie, this is a must have.
Classic lines, great paint, near flawless interior, show ready
engine bay, clean belly. What more do you need?
