"In fact, it was excellent controllability that gave the IROC-Z its
big advantage at Willow Springs. The Z's nearly neutral cornering
balance and ability to segue smoothly from understeer to oversteer
made driving on the track easy. In long sweeping corners, it was a
cinch to choose a line and set the car's attitude by gently
caressing the throttle. Upon exiting the bend, more power, along
with a bit of opposite steering lock, kept the Z pointed in the
desired direction without breaking traction at the rear wheels."
Car and Driver, when comparing the IROC with Mustang LX 5.0, July
1986
For consignment, a 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28 showing 69,785
miles, but the true miels are unknown. This is a good driver
quality car that could serve as someone's first muscle car or be
the basis for a cosmetic restoration.
Exterior
Flame Red Metallic is the color onboard here and it presents with
quite a bit of patina but the panels are straight. We have some
oxidation on horizontal surfaces as well as general fading
throughout. The chin spoiler and rocker panels are faded more than
the metal surfaces and the black painted coves of the headlights
also show some weathering. Hood louvers and fog light housing are
also in black. The window rubber guide strip is dry and cracked
throughout, a common trait of GM cars with prolonged exposure to
the sun. IROC Z badging is still in place on each door as well as
Z28 emblems there and on the decklid. The Z's standard 16-inch 5
spoke wheels carry Falken 245/50R16 tires with a late 2023 date
code. On the back, a nifty black gridded tail lighting wraps around
the rear quarters and comes to a point on each side. Along with the
general patina, we note some chin scrapes on the black air dam
under the chin.
Interior
Gray and black angled tweed broadcloth bowls you over on the door
panel uppers with some general overall looseness on the panels.
Inside, front the bucket seat configuration shows plain gray
stitched inserts and more of the angled tweed for the bolsters
showing a bit of age with some mild discoloration and small tear.
The rear seats are in good condition with some staining noted on
one. A black console and simple design dash house all the critical
instrumentation, as well as climate controls, and automatic shift
lever. In place of the radio, a triple gauge panel is nicely
positioned in the spot reading water, volts, and oil pressure. The
gray carpet on the floor shows some age but the conditions of the
cargo area are excellent and it provides dedicated space for the
T-tops.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, we find the 305ci LB9 V8 is driver quality
condition, fuel injected and rated at 190 horsepower. It's mated to
a rebuilt Sport Monster 700R4 4-speed transmission our consignor
tells us has less than 900 miles. Power is routed to the 10 bolt
axle with 3.23 gears and Positraction.
Undercarriage
Driver conditions underneath with plenty of patina and surface rust
but everything seems to be in place. There's some residual oil on
the pan but no dripping, and some oil drifting from the pinion seal
to the rear differential in back. The transmission pops with lime
green paint and the consignor tells us the fuel tank and sender are
newer. A single exhaust runs through a FlowMaster muffler which
gives way to two very nice polished exhaust tips. Four wheel power
disc brakes are onboard along with coil springs front and rear with
torque arms in back. While it's up on the lift, we note some
peeling paint on the door bottoms.
Drive-Ability
We're headed for a loop around the testing tarmac and note the
brake pedal is soft and the check engine light is on so we'll keep
the ride short. In that time, we also note the oil pressure gauge
is not functioning, nor the A/C, and the power windows are super
slow. But the car drives fine, sounds good, and handles in true
F-body fashion. All other operations function as they should. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
This car presents a great opportunity for IROC lovers who don't
mind providing a little TLC. As mentioned, the bones are here if a
full restoration is in the cards, but even minor improvements will
create a reliable driver with a stout transmission, newer tires,
and T-top versatility. Return it to Flame Red Metallic or the color
of your choosing with the beauty of knowing that the aftermarket
support network is strong with 80's Camaros and parts are still
available.
