Mercedes-Benz has long demonstrated the power of a diverse product
portfolio. With an ethos rooted in quality and innovation, the
marque has left its imprint on nearly every aspect of road
transport-from taxicabs to Formula 1, supercars to heavy trucks.
Though most often associated with luxury, Mercedes-Benz wisely
relied upon the middle of the market to sustain sales through
turbulent times. When the global luxury car market faltered in the
1930s, Mercedes quickly recognized the need to broaden its
offerings, doing so without compromising its reputation for
engineering excellence.
The 170 series was the result, first shown at the 1931 Paris Auto
Salon. Hans Nibel's chassis featured revolutionary all-independent
suspension in a lightweight frame, producing a level of ride
quality and handling unmatched in its class. By 1941, nearly 70,000
examples had been produced in a broad range of body styles-sedans,
cabriolets, roadsters, taxis, ambulances, even commercial vehicles.
At the top of the range sat the elegant Cabriolet A, hand-built at
Sindelfingen by Mercedes' in-house coachbuilding team. While priced
at a considerable $1,459 in-period, it allowed buyers to enjoy the
cachet of a bespoke Sindelfingen body at a fraction of the cost of
the flagship 540K.
Offered here is a 1941 Mercedes-Benz 170 V Cabriolet A finished in
a traditional two-tone livery of black and white over black
leather, presenting with the maturity of an older restoration that
has gracefully mellowed with time. The finish complements the clean
body contours and understated lines, while notable period details
include Bosch headlamps, factory hubcaps, and attractive
brightwork. The convertible top remains tidy and well-fitted,
showing only light creasing from use.
Inside, the two-seat cockpit reflects the restrained luxury of the
era. Black leather upholstery pairs with varnished wood trim and a
signature ivory steering wheel. Instruments and switchgear display
a gentle, honest patina, while the seating remains sound and
inviting. The presentation is consistent with a car that has been
enjoyed yet carefully preserved, offering authentic character
without pretension.
Propelling the Mercedes-Benz is a 1.7 liter four-cylinder engine,
which performs confidently with the kind of mechanical ease that
made the 170 V such a success in-period. Mated to the spry motor is
a four-speed gearbox that shifts as one would expect from a prewar
Mercedes: precisely and gracefully. The engine bay is tidy, with
correct Bosch ignition components and factory-mounted tools. Light
steering, supple suspension, and forgiving handling make this
Cabriolet A ideally suited to relaxed touring and club events.
This rare 170 V Cabriolet A captures the understated elegance and
engineering sophistication that cemented Mercedes-Benz's reputation
before and after the war. With just 794 produced, it represents an
opportunity to acquire a seldom-seen example of Sindelfingen
craftsmanship-a car that combines usability, heritage, and presence
in equal measure.
Offers welcome and trades considered.
