In 1938 Harry Hatch, the man behind one of the largest and most
successful distilleries in the world: Hiram Walker of Canada,
purchased this Packard model 1605 Super 8 chassis and shipped it to
England to have a body built in the style of a Rolls-Royce Sedanca
DeVille. He could have easily afforded any car in the world, yet he
chose Packard. He also chose House of Barker to build the body;
they were the premier coach builder to Rolls-Royce. As it turns out
Barker had been in business since 1710 and this is one of the last
bodies they ever constructed; they went out of business shortly
after.
EXTERIOR: The Barker styling is unmistakably Rolls Royce with
exception of the Packard front end! It even has the English style
"trafficator", a pop out turn signal. The stately Sedanca DeVille
body was constructed of aluminum. The open front chauffeur
compartment featured a very unique metal roof that slid out, most
were canvas. Other features include Trippe lights, a side mount
spare with painted metal cover and a lighted crystal Lalique
radiator mascot. The body is in pristine condition, straight and
fits right. The black paint is decades old and still looks like a
mirror. All of the chrome, glass and trim is excellent. The wheels
are restored and wrapped in big whitewalls.
INTERIOR: The chauffeur compartment was finished in Connolly
leather upholstery on the seat and door panels. It retains all of
the 1938 Packard fittings on the instrument panel including a cigar
lighter. The passenger compartment was abundant with special
features including twin lighted vanities, an intercom, divider
window, dual jump seats, a unique power operated rear window shade
and of course a built in bar. It is completely upholstered in
broadcloth fabric and has gold hardware. The burl wood trim has a
beautiful finish throughout.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: The smooth running Super 8 is an inline 8
cylinder motor, 320 ci and it produces 185 hp. Everything is
properly restored and detailed to original condition.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: To maximize cargo capacity the trunk lid opens
flat so another trunk could be strapped down to it. Then inside the
car's trunk compartment is a double locking floor safe for cash and
valuables.
UNDERSIDE: Very clean and proper. It has been well maintained by
the previous owner, he had a full time mechanic servicing his
collection. His motto was: "I want to be able to drive any car at
any time, anywhere" from his 30 car collection.
SERVICE: We take pride in our cars and reputation. Therefore, we
built a 2 million dollar, 10,000 square ft service center, and
hired a team of technicians to service the essentials on every car
we sell.
CONCLUSION: This car has a very thorough and impressive owner
history including the Hatch family owning it for the first 23
years. This is an elegant, genuine classic with impressive
credentials and a story almost as interesting as the car itself.
This is your opportunity, there is not another one of these on the
planet!
For nearly 30 years, I, Jay Grams, have personally written the
highlights for almost every car in our collection. What I provide
is my professional opinion based on my experience with these
vehicles. However, opinions can vary, and I strongly recommend a
personal inspection to form your own view. Our sales team is always
available to answer any questions you may have. One great option is
to request a personalized walk-around video, where we can showcase
the car and share our team's insights. **Our cars are displayed
within a museum setting. If you are interested in a specific
vehicle, please schedule an appointment with a salesperson to view
it. Without an appointment, there is an admission fee to enter the
showroom. If you decide to purchase a car, your admission will be
refunded, and you'll receive a one-year museum membership.
