"There's Thunderbird velvet in the 1963 Galaxie's all new ride, the
nearest thing to flight itself. With road taming improvements
topped by new front and rear suspensions, Galaxie's ride and
handling are so smooth, so effortless, you'll have to try Galaxie
to believe it! It doesn't come any easier. Galaxie's the car that
pioneered the twice a year or 6,000 mile service schedule!" From
the 1963 Ford brochure.
For consignment, a 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible showing 707
miles, but the true miles are unknown. With a monster stereo
system, a push button start, and 20-inch wheels, this mid century
classic adapts to the trends of the 21stcentury and still looks
good doing it.
Exterior
Stripped of its trim, its smooth panels now glisten with two stage
Candy Red paint, miles deep, and featuring dark red flames, almost
ghost-like, that stream down each side of the car. After the paint
wows you, it's those 20-inch Eagle Alloy wheels that catch your
eye, even the rear one which is tucked up into the fender leaving
plenty of polished metal exposed and giving the car a fantastic
stance and profile. Out back, the body folds collect the red paint
and cast shadows helping define those lines which are flanked by
rocket influenced tail lights over a straight chrome bumper and
rectangular exhaust tips. Polished windshield trim leads to the
black canvas top which is as smooth as silk and houses a plastic
rear window. A chip at the wheel opening and a paint run are the
only exterior imperfections on this radiant red ride.
Interior
The custom door panels are a sight to behold with a pair of
speakers and get this, a pair of monitors built in to each. We go
from the 21stcentury back to 1963 with the split bench in black
vinyl with upholstery buttons on their backs, all in nice shape and
mirrored by the condition and colors of the rear bench. A Grant
steering wheel fronts a custom dash, a black base with metallic
flake housing a couple of Pro Comp gauges and yes, a monitor front
and center. A larger Pioneer screen is in the center of the dash
and a twin pack of gauges fall just under it. On the floor, black
loop carpet surrounds the Hurst shifter and more speakers are
mounted in the kick panels of the footwells. The trunk is a sound
system showpiece with speakers and amps artfully boxed in and the
car's battery also resides in the trunk.
Drivetrain
Bold and show quality, the big engine under the hood is a consignor
stated 390ci V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor and a Cruise-O-Matic
3-speed automatic that routes power to the Ford 9" in back. Chrome
and polished metal dominate the bay and braided hoses with AN red
metal connectors finish the look.
Undercarriage
Yep, she's looking good under here as well with dual exhaust that
travel through the X-frame and intersect Hushmaster mufflers just
before giving way to the squarish chrome tips. Suspension consists
of coil springs up front and leaf springs in back and power brakes
are equipped as front disc and rear drum. Almost no surface rust to
speak of here and only bits of residual oil with no signs of active
leaks.
Drive-Ability
This Galaxie has a fantastic exhaust note, but we also find the
steering tends to not respond and the rear axle randomly locking
up. We don't spend a lot of time guessing on this one but do check
functions which all check the boxes for operation. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
Despite the glitches on our drive, this car presents beautifully.
It's sleek and muscular and has a winning paint job and wheel
combo. Let's not forget the custom doors, dash, and trunk along
with the beautifully appointed engine bay. Pop every opening when
you take this to the show because every inch of it is show
worthy.
