When discussing the Golden Age of muscle cars, there is almost no
debate that Shelby Cobra embodies the absolute pinnacle of
performance perfection. The problem with being nearly flawless is
that it is virtually impossible to improve upon it. However, with
this 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 Backdraft edition, which we at
Streetside Classics are proud to offer as a brand new vehicle,
perfection may have just received an upgrade. With just 68 actual
miles on its odometer, this car was ordered with the full
"blackout" treatment, which includes the interior, exterior trim,
and even the engine bay. The lone color exception on the exterior
of this Tuxedo Black beauty is the red outline of the black dual
center racing stripes, which makes it more visible. Unlike even the
most pristine original cars, which show no age or weathering, this
is a brand-new vehicle.
Step inside this racy roadster, and you'll be treated to an all-new
black diamond stitched leather interior, complete with subtle racy
red stitching. Classic Cobra features, such as door-release leather
straps, door pockets, a forward-tilt shifter, Sabelt racing
harnesses, and a reversed speedometer incorporated into the
AutoMeter gauge cluster, all respectfully nod to the original car's
signature style. The adjustable driver's seat and power-assisted
suede-wrapped Sabelt steering wheel add a touch of modern
convenience, making this car even more enjoyable to drive than the
one it is based on.
Under the front-hinged hood, we find an engine worthy of the Shelby
name. A Prestige Motorsports Iconic 427 cubic-inch V-8 featuring a
performance-oriented camshaft, lightweight aluminum heads, a single
four-barrel Holley carburetor, and ceramic-coated headers. Spent
gases are ultimately expelled through those grin-inducing,
ceramic-coated side pipes. According to the internal spec sheet,
this big-block V-8, produces a dyno-proven 492 horsepower and 529
pound-feet of torque. That power is then channeled through a Tremec
TKX five-speed manual transmission before being sent to a set of
18-inch, correct Cobra-style, genuine knock-off wheels, finished in
black. Unlike the bias-ply radials of the 1960s, this Backdraft
Cobra gets a set of 245/40ZR-18 front and wider 295/40ZR-18 rear
Nitto NT555 ultra-high-performance rubber, which does a much better
job of putting all that tremendous power to the pavement, and
launching you into a Joker-like fit of euphoric laughter even
quicker than Shelby's original.

As incredible as Carroll's masterpiece was, our 1965 Shelby Cobra
427 Backdraft edition is equipped with a fully independent coilover
suspension, featuring a BMW rear axle and 3.36 gearing, enabling
this boulevard bruiser to carve up corners. While at the same time,
four-wheel power disc brakes rein in all its power with far less
anxiety than anything made more than half a century ago. However,
the subtle upgrades this new Cobra comes with only serve to enhance
its abilities. All of the visual drama and visceral driving
experience that Shelby intended is alive and well, and possibly
even a bit more perfect in this modern reincarnation of his
legendary Cobra. But don't wait, because the only thing faster than
the king of muscle cars is how quickly it will be sure to sell.
