“Come upon an XJ220 for the first time and you see pure automotive sculpture, a Rodin on wheels, a shape that—to hell with practicalities—is simply gorgeous.” - Galvin Green

Following the release of the sensational Porsche 959 and Ferrari F40 supercars, several other automobile companies decided to stamp their own influence on the supercar market. Jaguar’s director of product engineering, Jim Randall, wanted to field a car with the grand touring capabilities of the 959, yet have looks and performance that placed it squarely above the F40. Keith Heflet penned a gorgeous, low-slung vehicle with scissor doors and hidden headlamps whilst engineering focused on integrating a 48-valve racing V12 developed by Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) with an advanced all wheel drive system. Initially shown at the 1988 Birmingham Motor Show, the prototype XJ220 was approved for production when customer interest skyrocketed.

With the Coventry factory at capacity, JaguarSport, a racing concern co-owned by the manufacturer and TWR, was assigned the task of transforming the gargantuan show car into a tractable production model. The company realized their original drivetrain was perhaps a bit too advanced, so the V12 was swapped for a 542hp twin-turbocharged V6 that had been successful in the XJR-10 and 11 race cars and the AWD was dropped entirely. As a result, the development team was able to shorten the wheelbase by eight inches. After suspension work at the Nürburgring, where the model set a lap record, and the appointment of a sumptuous interior styled by Nick Hull, the company began production, with the first cars getting delivered 1992. While the company originally intended to produce 350 cars (with customer order numbers proudly displayed on sill plates), the company ended up only producing 281. While the model was overlooked for some time given its lack of cylinders in comparison to its Ferrari and Lamborghini rivals, the XJ220 is recognized for its incredible styling and exceptional performance.

The sensational 1993 Jaguar XJ220 Coupe featured here is one of only seven left-hand drive XJ220s finished in stunning Monza Red over an impeccably kept Sand (Beige) leather interior. This exquisite motorcar has only been driven 1,829 carefully driven miles (ODO shows 3,024km), meticulously maintained, and always stored in a climate-controlled facility from new. Having undergone a $40,000 comprehensive service by a marque expert, this Jaguar is ready to be shown or driven by its next caretaker. I personally believe this virtually indistinguishable from new Jaguar XJ220's investment potential will grow beyond your imagination - one day its value is likely to exceed $1 million. Offered to the most demanding collector, investor, or enthusiast who desires to own one of the very best at an investment price!
