Cruisin Classics is excited to present to you this rare low-mileage
1984 Pontiac Fiero "Indy Pace Car Edition". In 1984, the Fiero
became the first mid-engine car to pace the Indianapolis 500 and
the first 4-cylinder car to do so since a Stoddard-Dayton paced the
1914 race. In honor of this achievement, Pontiac produced 2,000
pace car replicas. All of these Indy Fieros had aero body cladding
and new front and rear fascias that would be used on the '85 GT.
They were all white with a grey lower body section accented with
red pinstripes, they all had 4-cylinder engines, and they all
shared Grey and Red interiors. Despite the similarities, these Indy
cars could be ordered with a whole host of factory options -
meaning that some were loaded and some were base-model type cars.
This particular Fiero had all of the options "boxes" checked when
it was ordered, including the 4-speed transmission, and it
currently has only 1,674 ACTUAL MILES on the odometer! Let's take a
deeper dive into this absolute time-capsule from the 80s...
This Fiero comes to us dressed in its original factory paint that
is in high driver quality with only a few minor blemishes. Up
front, you'll see the working flip-up headlights that were a staple
of wedge-shaped cars in the 80's. The front fascia is adorned with
a crest-shaped "Indy Fiero" badge, complete with the Fiero Pegasus
in flight. Around the sides of the fenders are eye-catching "pace
car only" Indianapolis Motor Speedway badges. A black body-molding
strip runs tip to tail, and integrated into it are side turn signal
lights and door handles. The Fiero also sports dual body-color
sport mirrors. All pace cars came with commemorative Indianapolis
500 decal kits that were meant to be displayed on the doors with
another "PONTIAC" decal for the top of the windshield, but many
buyers chose not to have them put on, as is the case with this
Fiero. On the roof of this car is a removable pop-up glass sunroof
that can easily and safely be stored under the front "hood" with
factory rubber tabs to keep it in place. Still affixed to the
driver's window is the original window sticker for the car, showing
that it was delivered to New Jersey when new with a price tag of
$14,557. The driver's side of the car has an air intake just behind
the door that feeds the mid-mounted engine that sits right behind
the passenger compartment. A large rear spoiler wing sits atop the
decklid and gives the car a very sporty look. The taillight covers
stretch side to side across the rea,r and they are in excellent
condition - clear, with no cracks or imperfections. Poking out from
the bottom of the rear fascia are dual chrome exhaust tips on each
side. Completing the cool look of this Fiero are a set of 14"
HI-TECH aluminum white-painted wheels with a red outer stripe, all
wrapped in BF Goodrich white-letter Radial T/A's.
Lift the forward-opening front hood to reveal a very clean and tidy
"front trunk". There isn't room for any substantive storage in this
area as it is home to the headlight assemblies, radiator, brake
booster and master cylinder, and a spare tire and factory jack. As
mentioned before, there are rubber-coated tabs that provide a
storage area for the sunroof glass just above the spare tire.
Around back, under the decklid, is where you'll find both the trunk
and the mid-mounted engine. The trunk section is dressed in grey
carpet, and it's illuminated by a working courtesy light. Though
the trunk may seem small at first glance, it is very deep and it
offers a surprising amount of storage space. Ahead of the trunk is
an engine bay that is home to the original 2.5-liter 4-cylinder
fuel-injected GM "Iron Duke". Though not exceptionally fast, these
92hp engines provided excellent fuel economy and enough power to
make this lightweight 2-seater a fun driver. The engine is topped
off with a grey air cleaner with a "2.5 EFI" call-out and a grey
valve cover - both with black striping. Red plug wires add to the
look of this clean stock engine area. The engine is mated to a
4-speed manual MM4 transmission that sends power to the rear wheels
with 4.10 gears.
Inside the driver's door, you'll find an immaculately clean and
bone-stock red and grey interior illuminated by working courtesy
lights. The doors are covered in grey vinyl and red carpet and
offer stitched grey leather armrests, map pockets, and power locks.
The bolstered seats amazing condition and feature grey leather
sides, red cloth center inserts with Indianapolis 500 call-outs on
the backs, and speakers in the headrests. Between the seats is a
wide center console with a storage box, armrest, lighter, controls
for power windows and mirrors, and a shifter with a grey
leather-wrapped knob flanked by two small ashtrays. Ahead of the
console is a dash pod that houses the stereo and HVAC controls. The
stereo is a factory Delco AM/FM/Cassette unit with a 5-band
equalizer that plays through the dash speakers as well as those in
the headrests. The HVAC controls are easy to use, and they provide
cold A/C, hot heat, and a strong fan on demand. The driver is
treated to a grey leather-wrapped steering wheel with a working
horn on a tilt column. The turn signal stalk is multi-functional
and offers controls for intermittent wipers as well as cruise
control. Ahead of the wheel is a rectangular pod that holds a
speedometer, tachometer, and gauges for temp, fuel, and battery. To
the left of the gauges is a switch for the lights, and to the right
are switches for the rear defogger and trunk release. Overhead,
you'll find the aforementioned sunroof surrounded by a grey felt
headliner, map lights, and visors. The driver's visor has the
original dealer instructions for the emergency brake, and the
passenger's visor is equipped with the optional vanity mirror.
Underfoot is bright red factory carpet topped off with matching
carpeted floormats. This Fiero also comes with an uninstalled front
license plate holder, a service manual, and a clean CarFax.
Indy Fieros are rare cars to begin with, but finding one that is
fully loaded with working options, with a 4-speed manual, and only
1,674 actual miles is like encountering a unicorn! This
exceptionally well-preserved specimen would be a fantastic addition
to any collection, and its value will surely rise as the years pass
by and fewer & fewer low-mileage examples exist! Give our friendly
staff a call today and be the lucky one to call this classic ride
their own!
