The chance to pull a bona fide example of mid-'60s Mopar
awesomeness into your garage doesn't present itself very often, but
when that coveted ride is also powered by one of the most iconic
engines ever to emerge from an American assembly line, that
opportunity becomes much rarer. Yet, that's just what this 1966
Dodge Coronet Hemi Tribute offers. Clad in attention-getting red
paint, this is a great-looking classic. As you draw closer, you're
likely to appreciate just how precisely aligned it is, with nice,
even body panel gaps from front to back and no dents or dings to
detract from its visual impact. Clear glass surrounds the cabin,
and you'll find a complete assortment of period-correct badging
well-represented.
Climb inside and you'll be surrounded by a black vinyl interior
that's been thoroughly refreshed, mostly in its native factory
configuration, with a pair of bucket seats up front that straddle a
very fresh center console and a bench seat in back that shows only
the slightest of wear. For that matter, this entire driving
environment presents very nicely, with a clean dash that harbors an
assortment of clear factory gauges joined by an aftermarket
tachometer just in front of the shift lever.
Raise the hood and you'll find a 426 cubic-inch Hemi V8 lurking in
a very clean engine bay. As the engine that essentially put Dodge
on the mid-'60s muscle car map, the bar of expectations is set
awfully high for this powerplant, and yet it clears that bar
effortlessly. Built by the experts at Ray Barton Racing Engines in
Pennsylvania and fed by a pair of Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetors,
this iconic motor starts right up and pulls with all the ferocity
you'd imagine, given its storied history. It pairs with a 3-speed
automatic TorqueFlite A727 transmission that's shifting with
slip-free precision to make up a drivetrain fully capable of
pinning you back in your seat with no problem at all. And when you
tap on the accelerator, shorty headers leading out to a pair of
Dynomax mufflers provide just the perfect resonant exhaust note for
a classic muscle car like this. The added electric power steering
makes navigation nice and easy. Yes, this vintage Dodge is an
absolute blast to drive.
