"Ford for 1964, bred in open competition built for total
performance, a car so changed you will feel the difference when you
drive it! It takes more than a test track to breed a great car.
Everything Ford has learned in races, rallies, economy runs,
braking and acceleration trials has bred into the 1964 Fords the
kind of total performance you can't create on the proving grounds
alone. Before you buy any new car, you owe it to yourself to drive
one of these '64 Super Torque Fords!" from the '64 brochure
featuring a Galaxie 500XL
For consignment, a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL convertible showing
79,129 miles, but the true miles are unknown. The convertible page
of the brochure depicts a well dressed couple cruising in their
convertible with the top down on a black road, a smile or her face
and a confident grin on his.
Exterior
Ford shared familial features in 1964 giving all buyers the feeling
they were buying performance or luxury regardless of what model
they picked. Here, the distinctive round tail lights are shared
across the platform, as was the straight shoulder line and, with a
few exceptions, the straight and simple front fascia. Nice Vintage
Burgundy paint, single stage, is accented with the Galaxie's band
of side trim that starts wide and tapers back to the standard
strand of stainless and the whole thing runs stem to stern. 14-inch
aluminum slot wheels are a nice choice here and take to the smaller
rear wheel opening perfectly. Dual exhaust tips emerge and then
turn towards the ground, the last feature of the back that begins
with an enormous flat decklid. This ride has plenty of scratches,
bubbles, and chips along with a wavy body and some pitted metal.
The white canvas top is torn and detached.
Interior
The door panels are also driver quality with some general patina
and fraying of the lower panel. The front buckets in black vinyl
show a good bit of patina with some wear and compression, and the
rear seat is in good condition and is flanked by speakers installed
in the sidewalls. We note that the front seatbelts are anchored
through the use of quick links. The steering wheel and dash show
some light patina with age but are fully intact and would benefit
from being refreshed with some deep cleaning and paint touch up.
The instrument cluster is a cool design right out of Lost in Space!
In the metal mid panel, we find an AM/FM/Cassette radio and an
analog clock while the center console exhibits a ribbed design and
leaves a slot open for the shifter and it's all got some evident
years behind it. Black carpet on the floor is in good shape and a
bit loose in areas while the sizable trunk wears a vinyl mat and is
consistent in condition with the rest of this driver.
Drivetrain
A fairly clean engine bay houses a 289ci V8 with a 2-barrel
carburetor and a Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic sending power to
the Ford 9" in back with 3.00 gears.
Undercarriage
Heavy surface rust coats everything on the underside along with
some built up grime, oil on the pan, and general dirt. But we did
not find any invasive rust, just a lot of advanced surface rust
with pitting on many components. Dual exhaust carries stock style
mufflers before exiting out back and power drum brakes are at all
four wheels. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf
springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
Since the top is in poor shape, we set out with the top down and
immediately feel the brakes dragging a bit. In addition, the brakes
feel weak and the pedal is hard. That said, the engine runs fine
and the transmission shifts without issue. We note the turn signals
are not operating but all other functions available work as they
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
If you're looking for a cool driver, your ship just came in. If
you're looking for a restorable project to take up with your son,
(or daughter, or buddy, or self), this might be a great candidate.
If you teach at a restoration shop or school, here's your frog to
dissect. The possibilities with this Galaxie are out of this
world.
