"In the early 1960s a new type of tow truck was developed. The
wheel lift that tow truck used a metal yoke to lift the vehicle by
its wheels was a dramatic improvement over the antiquated
predecessor. However, the wheel lift tow truck had its share of
limitations. It would not work with front wheel drive or four wheel
drive vehicles. That's why, in the 1980s, as front wheel drive
vehicles became more common, another innovation was introduced. The
roll back truck. Today, roll back trucks are the most popular and
versatile type of tow trucks in the industry." Agtowinginc.com
For consignment, a 1986 Chevrolet C30 rollback truck showing 83,366
miles, but the true miles are unknown. It starts with the one ton
heavy duty truck and is fitted with the ever versatile rollback
bed. If you're looking for a way to haul your show or race car, or
start a new business, this bright red tow truck may do the
trick.
Exterior
A respray of Apple Red paint covers the cab of this square body and
stacked headlights flank the eggcrate grille over a straight chrome
bumper in front. That chrome is visually matched with the trailer
side mirrors while cab lights front the roof ahead of the emergency
light bar on the Millers pylons and behind a sizable windshield
visor. The aluminum bed shows some usage and includes a working
winch, two hooks, and a manual external control box. 16-inch eight
lug wheels carry LT235/85R16 tires, dualies in back. Imperfections
include some dullness to the roof paint, a missing end cap to the
emergency lightbar, surface rust on the front cross beam of the
bed, and a cracked corner of a tail light. The windshield is also
cracked and will need to be replaced.
Interior
The accommodating single cab begins with standard and generally
clean charcoal door panels with carpeted lowers and pleated vinyl
map pockets on each. The bench is covered in gray cloth with a
bowtie embroidered in the center charcoal column for a little
pizazz added to this work truck. Up front, a basic black steering
wheel leads to an efficient and simple gauge cluster along with the
familiar GM A/C panel and an AM/FM/Cassette radio. Our dash pad has
seen better days, exhibiting large chasms caused by decades of
exposure to the sun. A newer temperature gauge has been added below
not far from the floor shifter that snakes its way up from the
transmission tunnel on a floor covered in rubber matting rather
than carpet, and it's in fair condition. Colorful toggles inhabit a
panel to control the truck's lights.
Drivetrain
Under the big red hood is a driver quality 7.4 liter V8 with a
4-barrel carburetor and rated at 230 horsepower. The 4-speed manual
includes 3 speeds with a creeper gear and routes power to the Dana
60 in back with 3.73 gears.
Undercarriage
Lots of surface rust, some of it pitted, and patina on the
underside but otherwise complete and intact. We note some residual
oil on a crossmember but the underside is mostly dry. Dual exhaust
flows the length of the bed and through stock style mufflers while
suspension consists of coil springs up front and heavy duty leaf
springs, a tall stack, out back. Power brakes are onboard with
front disc and rear drum.
Drive-Ability
We crank up the big V8 and head out on our rescue mission, or at
least to test the truck. Almost immediately we note a significant
exhaust leak but continue on our journey around the test loop where
there's power on hand and the truck tracks straight and provides a
commanding view of the road. We find that the power locks,
tachometer, and A/C are not in working order and the power windows
are slow. Beyond that, all functions work as they should. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Some of us are pretty obsessive about not racking up miles on our
show cars. We've looked into enclosed trailers and have you seen
the price of those things? This is a nice alternative for bringing
that special car to the faraway show without diminishing the value
by adding ticks to the odometer. There's lots of potential here and
with that nice bench seat in front, you can stay close a little
longer, hold tight a little longer, longer with Big Red.
