1973 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 14 Coupe - Olympic Blue -
Original Engine - 4-Speed
Offered here is a beautiful 1973 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 14
Coupe finished in Olympic Blue over black vinyl. This example has
been in the care of the same owner for over 30 years and remains
rust free and very original, still powered by its numbers-correct
1600cc engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. With
strong mechanicals, a tidy presentation, and the right color
combination, this Ghia is a true survivor that's ready to be
enjoyed.
Exterior
The car presents in Olympic Blue, its original factory color,
having been repainted once in the correct shade. The finish carries
a deep, glossy shine and shows only minor blemishes and touch-ups
throughout. A paint gauge inspection confirms solid metal with only
one light repair noted behind the left rear wheel opening-non-rust
related. All trim, glass, lights, and hardware present very well,
and panel fitment is excellent from nose to tail. Importantly,
there are no signs of any accident history, and the body remains
rust free with just a few small oxidation spots.
Interior
Inside, the car retains its black vinyl upholstery, which appears
largely original along with the carpets, dash, and headliner. The
interior is clean, odor-free, and consistent with the car's
long-term preservation. All gauges display nicely; the speedometer
and odometer are functioning, though the clock is currently
inoperative. Switchgear works as intended, including headlights,
signals, and wipers. The radio is believed to be inoperative.
Windows roll smoothly, and the solid floors confirm the car's
excellent structural condition.
Engine Bay & Underside
Under the rear decklid sits the original 1600cc flat-four engine,
number AK122091, which starts easily, idles smoothly, and delivers
good power. The engine bay is tidy with recent service items
including a new fuel pump and distributor. A brand-new carburetor
is included with the sale, though the currently installed Solex
functions well. There is a very small, non-structural rust spot
near the battery box, and a slight exhaust leak at the
manifold/muffler connection is noted. The underside is very
original, solid, and free from rust concerns, reflecting the car's
careful stewardship.
Driving Impressions
On the road, this Ghia is an absolute pleasure. The 4-speed gearbox
shifts smoothly on upshifts and feels solid in all gears. The only
quirk noted is that when downshifting from third to second gear, it
will grind unless double-clutched; otherwise, the transmission
performs well. The car tracks straight with minimal play, braking
is confident and even, and the pedal has a strong feel. The tires
ride quietly, enhancing the composed and enjoyable driving
experience. This is a car that inspires confidence behind the wheel
and provides the lively, fun-to-drive character that makes the
Karmann Ghia such a beloved classic.
Conclusion
This 1973 Karmann Ghia Coupe checks all the right boxes-rust free,
long-term ownership, original engine, and the iconic Olympic Blue
finish. It's a car that can be enjoyed immediately as a reliable
driver, while also presenting well enough to show with pride. With
its charming character and excellent condition, this Ghia is ready
for its next enthusiast caretaker.
