Vehicle Description
1978 Dodge Li'l Red Express Pickup
Dodge released the Li'l Red Express truck In 1978 it was one of the
most unique Dodge trucks that had ever been produced. The truck was
a hit with the public; 2,188 were produced in 1978 and production
of the 1979 Dodge Lil' Red Express truck was increased to 5,118.
Both years featured a high performance 360ci V8 producing between
225 and 230 horsepower. Thx tododgeconnection.com
For consignment, a 1978 Dodge Li'l Red Express pickup with a title
verified 58,982 actual miles. This fairly rare truck features a
rebuilt 360ci V8, a Holley Sniper EFI system, a lowered stance, and
some other tasteful mods that make this a well sorted desirable
collectible that was showy from the start.
Exterior
This restored Express was disassembled to be painted, and the PPG
Bright Canyon Red and now iconic decals are just about flawless.
Exterior accoutrements that make this truck special and unique
include, of course, the exhaust stacks, tall and chromed, the
richly grained wood planks bolted to the bed sides, and the bold
door graphics with an old west motif. The '78 fascia is
characteristic as '79 would introduce quad headlights and move
marker lights down. This example has been lowered and hunkers down
over the 15-inch polished slotted wheels with staggered size tires.
The wood and bedrails inside the bed have been painted to match and
shine with a show quality gloss and unless it's covered in
sheepskin, we're not putting anything back there. Chrome and other
metalwork, trim, graphics and wood are impeccable on the truck and
we could not find any exterior imperfections.
Interior
Woodgrain accenting now adorns the black door cards framed in the
Canyon Red paint and speakers now occupy the lower panel. The
bucket seats were reupholstered in the black vinyl you see here and
present cleanly against the back wall and its tinted rear window. A
three spoke steering wheel is offered to the driver ahead of the
standard dash now accompanied by the Holley Sniper monitor screen
on the left and twin gauges mounted underneath. The newer black
carpet is spotless and the painted red ceiling glistens like wet
lipstick.
Drivetrain
Chrome valve covers, air filter lid, and alternator dress up this
clean engine and bay which houses a rebuilt 360ci V8 with a mild
cam and bored .030 over. It's now fuel injected thanks to the
Holley Sniper EFI system and the date-correct A727 Torqueflite
3-speed automatic behind it was rebuilt with a shift kit. The Dana
9 rear features new 3.55 gears and axle seals. Short tube headers
being the exhaust process.
Undercarriage
Super clean underneath with the stained wood shining through almost
well enough to bring floor mirrors to the show. The dual exhaust
travels a short distance, taking in black FlowMaster mufflers just
before reaching for the sky via the chrome and shielded stacks. A
2" drop has been applied to the coil spring suspension up front
while a four inch drop is used on the leaf springs in back. Power
brakes are onboard as front disc and rear drum.
Drive-Ability
With the exhaust terminating closer to the ear than in any other
vehicle, the sound almost warrants sitting at idle and just hitting
the gas, but we have a job to do and take this Li'l Red truck
through the test loop where the mild build creates wild results in
the form of healthy acceleration while the lowered profile creates
the best handling Li'l Red we've ever represented. Other than the
horn, all functions afforded the driver and truck operate as they
should and we escort the dual stacks back to the mall. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Even if they produced 100,000 of these trucks, the unique
configuration and esthetic treatment would be unique. But in '78,
only a tick over 2,000 trucks were produced and this one has been
restored and tastefully modded without losing the Li'l Red appeal.
Here's one for the discerning collector, especially if you love
special edition trucks.
