"It's only fitting that the RX-7 convertible should herald the
return of the affordable topless sports car, for it was the RX-7
coupe that, ten years ago, ushered in the modern era of the
affordable closed sports car. If you are unfamiliar with those
joys, take it from us that there are few experiences more
pleasurable than driving a low slung open car on a warm, beautiful,
sunny day. We can assure you that the sensation of motion and the
exposure to the environment are just as satisfying in the RX-7
convertible as they were in an MG TC in the forties." Car and
Driver, review of the 1988 RX-7, Jan. '88
For consignment, a 1988 Mazda RX-7 showing 62,770 miles, but the
true miles are unknown. We're thrilled to have this first year,
second gen RX-7 at Classic Auto Mall and although nearly 300,000
were produced between 1988 and 1992, this is the first we've had
the honor of representing. This is a one family car originally
purchased in California.
Exterior
They've been compared to Porsche 924/944's but to those who know,
this smooth wedge shaped Mazda is distinct and nowadays, rare to
see. This one is finished in two stage black paint and topped by
the black canvas soft top that connects to the raked windshield
with front quarter windows on the other side of the A-pillar. That
top has dual functions and the rigid piece over the passengers can
be removed targa style. Hidden headlights up front are augmented by
driving and marker lights and the intake falls under the bumper
cover and includes two side ducts. The sport mirrors also have
aerodynamic openings close to the A-pillar and a wing on this one
simply adds to its sporty nature. 15-inch diamond spoke wheels
carry 205/60R15 tires with a mid 2024 date code and the aluminum
finish is a wonderful contrast to the black paint. A crack in a
marker light and a ding on the rocker panel are the only
imperfections we find on this classic Mazda.
Interior
Somewhat reminiscent of other Japanese sports cars, the solid door
panels have perforated inserts over carpeted kick panels with a
storage bin as well as courtesy lights and both doors present
cleanly. Inside, we have charcoal gray leather bucket seats, nicely
cushioned and shaped for sport with just a touch of patina and
compression on the driver's side, but nothing close to a deal
breaker here. Mazda has some great steering wheels and this three
spoke unit is no different, framing the standard dash with black
faced gauges and orange numbering, a color that highlights the
stalks on the column and even the entertainment system which
features AM/FM as well as a CD player and cassette. Just above it
is the A/C panel. The shifter resides in the center console with a
black leather boot and rubberized handle. More orange digits
indicate the volume controls for the headrest speakers just behind
the shifter. Plush gray carpet floods the floor and a carpet piece
also contours to the intricate curves of the small trunk.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 1.3 liter Mazda rotary engine producing 146
horsepower and fuel injected. It's mated to a 5-speed manual
transmission that routes power to the rear axle, in true sports car
form, and 4.10 gears. Four wheel power disc brakes are on
board.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath with dry conditions and some typical surface rust.
Here we find dual exhaust that carry stock style mufflers in the
back and emit chrome tips under the valance. Suspension consists of
MacPherson struts in front and back with semitrailing arms
fortifying the rear.
Drive-Ability
Why, don't mind if we do and inasmuch, we find a well balanced,
good running car that's comfortable and quick, and feeling quicker
because of your proximity to the ground and proficiency in the turn
ins. We find no function that doesn't work on this well constructed
vehicle. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This is a rare opportunity to obtain a very nice example of a
relatively uncommon car. Why is it a rare opportunity? Because
apparently, those who own them aren't parting with them very often,
they're that good and now classic. If you've been searching the
interwebs for one of these and stumbled across this one, take a
close look and call with questions or make your way to Morgantown,
PA.
