Vehicle Description
1950 Ford Custom Deluxe Convertible
"If there's a touch of gypsy in our soul, if you like the sun and
the wind and the open road, you'll surely thrill to this sleek,
stunning convertible. A slight touch of the finger, and the snug
top goes up or down. A slight touch of the foot, and you're sailing
off to faraway places behind Ford's smooth, easy power." From the
1950 sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1950 Ford Custom Deluxe convertible with a title
verified 22,877 actual miles. This is a fantastic example that
looks like it jumped right out of the sales catalog, right down to
the white walls and correct wheel covers. This one has only been
exposed to local shows where it has garnered some awards, but might
be destined for bigger venues.
Exterior
This slab sided beauty is now covered with two stage Cambridge
Maroon Metallic and the folks at Harvard must have been impressed
when this baby pulled up to drop off their latest admission. Surely
shinier than new, the shoe box design is accented with a stainless
body spear that traverses front to back, traveling just over the
fender skirts and highlighting the Custom model up front. Further
up front, the hood ornament is worth the price of admission, a
sculpted Trojan helmet with clear acrylic serving as the plume. The
15-inch wheels are color matched and adorned with a hubcap and trim
ring, all enveloped by white wall tires, an option that cost more
back in the day. The black canvas top houses a relatively small
rear window, glass trimmed by a metal frame. Pill shaped tail
lights emerge from a curved feature of the rear fender and add
interest to the straight panels. A touched up scratch and inclusion
on a lower panel are the only imperfections here as the metalwork
and paint are in excellent condition.
Interior
The body colored sill tops the inner doors which split red and
black vinyl, smooth panels and ribbed, silver trim and silver
handles, both presenting cleanly. Red bottoms on the split bench
are contrasted by the black vinyl uppers with red piping and single
ornamental buttons, showing a bit of patina creasing but in decent
condition, lending the design to the rear bench where red textured
side walls add more color. A rather ornate black steering wheel
presents to the driver witha shiny horn ring and decorative center
cap, leading to the glossy color keyed dash housing a speedometer
front and center, ringed by other bits of information. Metal knobs
and an AM radio occupy the mid panel, and a clock is molded into
the dash dead center. The floor is covered with a rubber mat and
like the rest of the interior, presents cleanly. In the trunk,
another rubber mat and two spare wheels!
Drivetrain
Under the hood is the glorious and clean 239ci flathead V8, rated
at 110 horsepower and fueled by a 2-barrel carburetor. A 3-speed
manual on the tree has overdrive and eventually finds 4.10 gears in
back. Drum brakes are at all four wheels which the brochure touted
as king size brakes that stop you with 35% less pedal pressure. The
car runs on a 6 volt system and our consignor informs us the
battery is newer.
Undercarriage
Fantastically clean underneath, rust free, and only a drop of oil
on the pan. An X-frame dominates the space and a single exhaust
flows through a stock style muffler before exiting a chrome tip out
back. Coil springs live up front while leaf springs provide the
suspension in back.
Drive-Ability
One of the print ads shows a very happy couple and a very happy
collie dog hanging his head outside the open car, loving life. This
car gives you that type of feeling as the big interior and large
exterior presence glide along under the power of the flathead.
Smooth going on the big white walls and the car tracks straight and
handles well, and it still requires pedal pressure for braking,
which it also does well. We note the clock and radio don't work but
all other functions operate as they should on this '50 Ford. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
It wasn't just a new decade, but for Ford it was a time to
introduce new innovation. Improved front suspension and steering
linkage, better brakes, a new engine, and a 5 cross member box
section frame were just some of the highlights. They're all here on
this gleaming example of American automotive manufacturing at the
turn of a new decade. Well, we're in a new century and this can now
be considered a work of art as well.
