Vehicle Description
1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe 4 Door Sedan
In 1938 the Chevrolet Motor company offered an upscale version of
the Master and the Master Deluxe sedan. This was a common car
selling over 302,000 units and later became popular with hot
rodders because of the availability of parts, and the ease of
replacing the engine, many versions and interpretations survive
today.
For consignment, a 1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe 4 door sedan
showing 18,020 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This steel
bodied beauty has been family owned since 1970 and witnessed two
restorations, one to original condition in 1986, then moved to
Street Rod status in 1996.
Exterior
The tall Master Deluxe comes at you with a flat straked chrome
grille that is perfectly integrated to the body lines, underscored
by a slightly curved chrome bumper, and punctuated by chrome light
rings around the bullet cased headlights. Let's not forget the
piercing hood ornament which resembles Ultraman at speed, and
fronts a long hood line that's adorned with side vents that are as
attractive as they are functional. A humpback trunk adds more
length to the car, here in two stage Ruby Red Metallic, and is
flanked by protruding tail lights over another chrome bumper and
impressive chrome exhaust tips. Chrome Nugget wheels stand this car
up with 14-inchers in front and 15-inchers in back, wrapped in
staggered size tires and visually connected by the black running
board. The paint has multiple imperfections including a spill stain
trailing from the gas cap and significant cracking throughout. Some
of the metalwork, including the grille, would benefit from
restoration.
Interior
Handsome gray door panels include tweed lowers, vinyl uppers, and a
gray painted window frame and all four present cleanly. Tweed
continues on the front bucket seats and the rear bench and
sidewalls. A familiar Chevy steering wheel from the 80's presents
to the driver in front of a body colored dash and billet style
faceplate housing a series of clean black faced gauges. 1938 makes
an appearance in the center with a deco style surround for the
added white faced tachometer and we return to modern times with an
AM/FM/CD radio next to levers for the fans. A tall shifter and
handbrake rise from the open floor covered in gray carpet and
surrounded by tweed walls in the footwells. The headliner and visor
keep the theme and are in fine condition. It also covers the trunk
walls over a deep pile gray carpet topped by a battery box.
Drivetrain
Under the hood we have a clean 350ci V8 with Edelbrock valve covers
and an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor. It's backed by a TH350
3-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the 10 bolt axle
and the brakes are configured as front disc and rear drum. The car
has headers and runs on a 12 volt system.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath as well, with some typical surface rust and a few
drops of oil on the pan, transmission, and some dampness on the
rear differential. The dual exhaust wears a pair of Cherrybomb
mufflers before heading out back and exiting via chrome tips. A
Mustang II front end is onboard and includes power steering while
leaf springs occupy the back.
Drive-Ability
Who doesn't love a car from the 30's with a relatively modern
engine? The roomy cockpit is a comfortable place to be and the back
seat is even more comfortable. A turn of the key and the trusty 350
comes to life with a healthy bellow, setting this big four door
into motion. It's got adequate power, straight tracking, and of
course, steering is a breeze. We note the speedometer is not
working nor the odometer, plus the wipers only move halfway up.
Beyond that, all functions on board were found in working order.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
"So kiss a little longer, stay close a little longer, hold tight a
little longer, longer with Big Red. That Big Red freshness lasts
right through it!". Okay, these may be lyrics from a gum
commercial, but they could also apply to this really great 38!
Whether it's date night or a family outing for ice cream, this
Master Deluxe is a fantastic cruiser for your consideration.
