For Sale: 1966 Ford Mustang in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1966 Ford Mustang Convertible

Having only recently been introduced to the public, the first gen Mustangs seem to have changes made to design aspects nearly every year, some drastic, others subtle. From 1965 to 1966, a few subtle exterior items changed included the door scoops which were done with a 3 bar black and chrome variant in 1966, the vertical bar through the running horse on the grille was gone in 1966 and the grille itself went from honeycomb design to vertical and horizontal bars, and back up lights were standard for 1966 and optional for 1965, so if you don't see them chances are it's a 1965.

For consignment, a 1966 Ford Mustang convertible showing 986 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car has been garage kept and under cover since 2001 and although it's only been sporadically driven in the past five years, it is a veteran of local shows where it garnered several awards.

Exterior
Silver Blue is the color of choice here and it's a good one in two stage shine. The familiar face of this classic features the new grille for 1966 and the horse in the corral above a nicely chromed front fender with lower supports that waterfall down on a body colored lower fascia. This car features a running horse hood ornament rising from the nose. The tell tale faux quarter panel vents are affixed at the termination of the body crease detail and the tail end trails off with the smooth short panels of the rear fenders. Looking at the back reveals an instantly recognizable tail which cannot be confused for any other classic. The triple tail lights, the center gas cap, the body colored valance, and another good showing of a chrome bumper means Mustang, pure and simple. Our wheels here are 14-inch wearing wide white wall tires with a late 2024 date code. Chrome, metalwork, and paint are fantastic on the car and a few small bubbles down low are the only imperfections we find.

Interior
Vinyl clad door cards contrast dark blue and light blue, and both doors present in great condition. Two tone carries onto the seats where light blue surrounds tuck and roll inserts in darker blue, textured vinyl and none of the seats, including the back bench appear to have any damage or wear whatsoever. A blue 3 spoke steering wheel with horn buttons on each occupies the column which traces down to the elongated oval dash that houses five gauges including the large speedometer front and center, all in clean condition. Over the top a dark blue dash cover is sculpted around the radio, in this case an AM/FM/Cassette, flanked by another oval around the glove box to the right. The Mustang T-shifter rises from a center console that is designed with a ribbed silver strip traveling its length ending as a more modern center console with armrest and cupholders sits on top. Blue loop carpet occupies the footwells and the carpet continues throughout while a period correct plaid mat covers the sizable trunk cleanly.

Drivetrain
If the exterior and interior are the show at center stage, the engine bay represents backstage. More functional than frilly and retaining a stock appearance, ultimately supporting the main players exposed to the audience. Here we find a 200ci inline 6 cylinder engine with some Ford blue painted parts and a 1-barrel carburetor on top, good for 120 horsepower. A C4 3-speed automatic transmission is mounted behind and sends power to the Ford 7.25" rear with 3.20 conventional gears. The car is equipped with drum brakes at all four wheels.

Undercarriage
Clean and mostly dry conditions prevail underneath where things are uniformly black and surface rust is minimal. We note one spot of rust through on a body brace but it appears to have been halted long ago. Some oil on the rear differential is also spotted. A single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler and a chrome tip has been added to the steel pipe in back. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in the back.

Drive-Ability
We saw this car drive up to the mall under its own power and knew right away it was a good runner. The inline six comes to life effortlessly with a turn of the key and the new tires help provide a pleasurable ride that is smooth, good handling is noted, and decent power for this relatively light car from the 60's. The horn clicks but does not honk and that's the only check mark on our test sheet as all other functions operate as intended on the blue classic. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This is a striking car in its silver blue paint and the white walls absolutely set this Mustang apart, surely turning heads wherever it goes. We've met very few car enthusiasts who don't love first gen Mustangs and this is a fine example with a manual soft top that gives you the option of riding in style with the wide open sky above. Saddle up, this one's a winner!
