1968 Pontiac GTO - 400 High Output - Numbers Matching
This stunning 1968 Pontiac GTO is a numbers-matching 400 High
Output car, originally sold new through Maycrink Pontiac in Santa
Cruz, California. Well-optioned and beautifully restored, this GTO
received a complete rotisserie restoration in 2002, including a
full overhaul of its original WS-code 400ci HO V8. The history is
well-documented - from its first owner in California, to a
long-time caretaker in Montana, and on to its most recent owner in
North Dakota who added some tasteful performance upgrades. Included
with the sale are all of the original engine components, ensuring
this car can be returned to factory spec if desired.
Exterior
Although originally finished in Verdoro Green, the car now wears a
rich, high-quality red repaint that presents with a deep gloss and
an A- rating overall, showing only minimal blemishes upon close
inspection. All metal appears original, including unmolested
quarter panels and stamped original fenders. The body is
exceptionally solid from front to back. Chrome, brightwork, and
trim are excellent, with glass that is clear and scratch-free. All
gaskets and moldings remain supple and well-fitted, reflecting the
quality of the restoration.
Interior
Inside, the original Rally Gauge cluster is in beautiful condition,
as is the dash pad. Carpeting and headliner were replaced during
the restoration, while the center console and one kick panel have
been replaced with correct-quality pieces - originals are included.
It is believed the seat upholstery is original, showing excellent
preservation and minimal wear. The cabin presents as both highly
original and extremely well-kept.
Under the Hood and Body
The numbers-matching WS-code 400ci HO V8 (360 HP) runs beautifully,
holding a smooth idle and delivering strong performance. While the
original engine was retained, the most recent owner installed an
Edelbrock RPM kit in 2006, performed by Quality Engines of Fargo,
ND. All original parts, including the heads, intake, exhaust
manifolds, and carburetor, are included with the sale. Underneath,
the condition is near show-quality - clean, dry floor pans, solid
rockers, straight frame rails, and spotless wheel wells. Suspension
and exhaust components are in excellent condition, showing very
little use since the restoration.
Driving
Equipped with a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission - believed to be
a period-correct but non-original M21 - the GTO shifts crisply and
pulls strongly through the gears. Power steering and the factory
Ride & Handling Package make it a pleasure to drive, while the
factory Saf-T-Track heavy-duty rear axle delivers sure-footed
traction. This is a well-sorted car that is equally at home on
display or out on the road.
Conclusion
With its desirable options list, numbers-matching HO 400, extensive
documentation, and outstanding restoration quality, this 1968
Pontiac GTO represents an opportunity to own one of the most iconic
muscle cars of the era. Whether you're looking for a showpiece, a
weekend cruiser, or a top-tier addition to your collection, this
GTO will not disappoint.
