Super clean example of the legendary 240D. Indestructible Mercedes
diesel engine with automatic transmission. Beautiful repaint and
restored interior. Ice cold A/C. A lovely car with legendary
Mercedes-Benz quality that will outlast us all. This might just be
the most reliable vehicle ever created by man. The Mercedes-Benz
240D. Simple, rugged, and built to an incredibly high standard,
they routinely go to half a million miles with only basic
maintenance. This attractive 1982 Mercedes-Benz 240D sedan has been
treated to restoration work that's all out of proportion to its
modest price, including a quality respray that gives it a look that
belies 40+ years of life. The look is instantly recognizable,
because this is how Mercedes-Benz vehicles looked for years. This
is a car from when engineers controlled the company, not marketers,
and the result is a car whose doors close like the proverbial bank
vaults, which rides over pavement like it was carved from a single
ingot of steel, and where everything still fits properly and feels
crisp and solid. The white paint is unassuming, which is
appropriate, but it ahs a nice shine and the bodywork underneath is
super straight?no patching or bondo was needed and you can see just
how clean this car is with a single glance underneath. The chrome
is still shiny, and all the lenses are crisp and bright. Obviously
someone spent quite a bit of cash to bring it up to this level, and
now it's time for you to benefit from that investment.Likewise, the
tan MB-Tex interior was freshened and provides the perfect
complement to the white bodywork. It looks like the door panels,
seat covers, and carpets were all recently replaced and with fresh
weather seals, it closes up like a Mercedes should. That giant
black steering wheel framing a trio of simple, easy-to-read gauges
is a Mercedes-Benz trademark that goes back to the '60s, and makes
the 240D feel substantial when you're behind the wheel. Of note,
everything seems to work, including the A/C which blows nice and
cold?a real rarity. The switchgear still feels crisp and the
transmission shifter has that unique gate that makes it easy to
choose a gear simply by feel. Nice wood appliques on the dash warm
up the Teutonic surroundings and give the 240D an appropriately
upscale feel. There's also a set of fresh coco mats on the floor
and a back seat big enough for real-sized adults. And that
originally Becker Europa stereo is just plain cool with those funky
knobs. Overhead there's a fresh headliner and the spacious trunk is
properly finished with reproduction bulkheads and the original
spare and jack assembly underneath. The 2.4 liter inline-4 diesel
engine isn't going to win any drag races, but like the legend of
the tortoise and the hare, it will always get you there.
Bulletproof reliable, easy to service, and miserly with the fuel
it's a tribute to what good engineering can accomplish. You'll note
the engine bay is extremely clean, and that comes from a
combination of proper service work over the years and living in a
warm, dry climate all its life. You'll find newer belts and hoses
with correct clamps, modern R134a refrigerant in the A/C system,
and a lot of authenticity with the finishes on the various fittings
and lines. It starts easily with that characteristic diesel clatter
and ticks over at idle with a pleasant hum. It pulls the sedan
around without seeming to work very hard (it makes good torque) and
the 3-speed automatic transmission always seems to find the right
gear at the right moment. Suspension, steering, and brakes feel
tight and responsive thanks to a lot of new components and it has a
pleasingly controlled ride that is pure Mercedes-Benz quality. Also
be sure to note just how clean it is underneath?despite these cars'
reputation for rusting, this one has zero signs of tin worm. Nice!
It also looks right sitting on 185/75/14 whitewall radials with
color-matched Mercedes-Benz hubcaps.Extras include the original
owner's manuals and tool roll.If you remember these cars or had one
when they were new, you know that they are a special combination of
quality, durability, and class. The driving experience is still
special after all these years, and you can rest assured that you
can enjoy this car with little more than basic maintenance, and
then pass it down to your kids who can do the same. Like I said,
it'll outlast us all. With great colors and that intangible
Mercedes quality feel, this affordable 240D will make you feel like
you just won the lottery. Call today!Harwood Motors always
