Vehicle Description
1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Hardtop
Over the course of the fourth generation Monte Carlo, nearly
900,000 units were sold. In 1983, a high performance edition was
introduced but only 4,714 SS's were made, the success of which
resulted in an average of 30,000 a year being produced through
1988. But Chevy's bread and butter was the standard two door Monte
Carlo which were ubiquitous on the streets of America through the
80's.
For consignment, a 1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo hardtop showing
78,935 miles, but the true miles are unknown. According to our
consignor, this car was owned by the original owner for 42 years
and as such, the car remains in stock configuration, serving as a
surviving example of an everyday commuter car used by hundreds of
thousands of people.
Exterior
Pebble Gray Metallic is the GM color here in single stage which
just looks right with its satin finish. Its G-body shape is
instantly recognizable, and the Monte sets itself apart from the
Regal and Olds with a more angular quarter window and fender lines
that sweep gently down, here accentuated by pinstriping. The quad
headlights and eggcrate grille was nothing out of the ordinary but
the somewhat trapezoidal shaped tail lights that flank the decklid
are distinct and attractive and contain the Monte Carlo crest in
the center. It also appears on the hood ornament and was inspired
by the House of Grimaldi and Prince Charles III of Monaco. 14-inch
wheels carry 205/70R14 tires which was a common combination in the
80's, and the crest is on each center cap. The paint and metal are
in great shape and we could find no exterior imperfections.
Interior
The outer time capsule leads to an inner one as GM's familiar door
panel configuration includes a pleated gray vinyl insert, plastic
mid panel, and carpeted kick panel on the doors, each presenting
cleanly. The cloth bucket seats touch in the center where an
armrest can be dropped to share with your passenger and modest
headrests ride the ridge, and they are in very good condition,
along with a back bench that utilized the same gray cloth, showing
just a touch of looseness in the center. The faux wood inlay strip
in the steering wheel rim is a nice touch, and recalls the
extensive simulated wood used on the dash. The instrument cluster
hints at some sportiness for '83 but a clock stands in place for a
tach, and needles are replaced with light indicators on some
meters. A Sanyo AM/FM/Cassette player is in place and while not the
original Delco, it does look period correct under GM's standard A/C
levered panel. Medium pile gray carpet covers the floor, the foam
backed headliner is in good shape, the visors show some usual
droop, and the trunk contains the standard black mat and spare tire
set in a dedicated depression.
Drivetrain
A relatively clean engine bay houses the ubiquitous 3.8 liter V6
which was standard, and it's mated to a TH350 3-speed automatic
transmission that routes power to the 10 bolt rear axle. Power disc
brakes are equipped up front and power drums back things up on the
rear wheels.
Undercarriage
Typical and expected surface rust is noted underneath but
conditions are otherwise dry and clean. We do note some green
staining and dampness on the core support. The no nonsense single
exhaust flows through a stock style muffler then exits behind the
right rear wheel. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and
a 4 link with coil springs in back.
Drive-Ability
You'd expect some things from '83 to fail, but not in the case of
the well preserved Monte. In fact, it runs well, tracks straight,
and all functions on board operate as they should. We didn't have
these in high school, but our parents did, and this time capsule
brings it all back! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
The 1983 Monte Carlo brochure proclaims, "Once you experience Monte
Carlo's interior comfort, appreciate its unique styling and
discover its attainable price, we think you'll find Monte Carlo is
the car for you. It's a classic.". With all of the premonition
accuracy of The Simpsons, Chevrolet was right, this Monte Carlo is
a classic!
