Vehicle Description
1987 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
"Knight Rider, which premiered on NBC on September 26, 1982, would
run for 84 episodes over four seasons and generate an obscene
amount of money in merchandising, from toy cars to t-shirts to
lunch boxes. It would also make an international superstar out of
David Hasselhoff, who had spent the previous seven years on a
daytime soap opera. The Knight Industries Two Thousand, or KITT for
short, was more sidekick than transport. Incredibly, Pontiac
originally turned down the Knight Rider deal." Thx Hagerty.com How
Knight Rider's KITT became a Pontiac Trans Am.
For consignment, a 1987 Pontiac Trans Am with a title verified
106,938 actual miles and converted on the exterior to be KITT.
These miles may be in question as the odometer is no longer
working. Although the original cars were 1983 models, the body
style continued with minor changes through 1990, so this '87 is
lends itself well to reproduce the television star.
Exterior
Naturally, two stage black paint covers the car monochromatically
and flows across the T/A's offset hood bulge link black ink. Wheel
covers, often referred to as bowling ball hubcaps, cover the wheels
to continue the blackout package and look authentically KITT. It's
the front treatment that really hits it home, the triple foglights
under the nose and of course, the cycling red light in the center,
modeled from the Cyclon Warriors featured in Battlestar Galactica,
epic! In back, the tail lights are covered with a dark smoked
plexiglass panel and the decklid is topped by a rear wing. Tinted
windows complete the package and we could not find any exterior
imperfections on this camera ready F-body.
Interior
The T/A retains its mostly original interior beginning on the door
panels with gray cloth inserts in charcoal plastic framing, clean
and ergonomic. The cloth bucket seats up front and the rear 2+2
seats are in nice condition with the fronts providing ample side
support and extended thigh pads. We note some wear on the top of
the rear seats, likely caused by exposure to the sun. A leather
wrapped black steering wheel shows slight patina and leads to the
ultra 80's dash, gray plastic surrounding the instrument cluster
with gauges looking like something out of Tron the movie. The graph
like design backs the center console as well where the T-shifter
resides along with side mirror and window controls. An updated
AM/FM/CD radio lives in the center stack just under the A/C panel
and plush gray carpet covers the floor. The solid roof car has an
overhead console and the fleece-like gray headliner is in good
condition. A large speaker box contours to the back wall of the
cargo area.
Drivetrain
Clean conditions are found under the hood where a 350ci V8 resides,
fuel injected and mated to a 700R4 4-speed automatic. Power is
routed to the 10 bolt axle, and power brakes are onboard to slow
KITT down, with power discs up front and power drums in back.
Undercarriage
Generally clean underneath with some typical surface rust but dry
conditions. The single exhaust system leads to a Dynomax muffler
which emits two steel angle cut tailpipes. Suspension consists of
coil springs up front and a torque arm and coil spring suspension
in back.
Drive-Ability
Unfortunately, you can't just tell KITT what to do like on TV, so
we're relegated to turning the key, old school style, and we're
okay with that. The 350 comes to life and we go look for some bad
guys on the test loop. Decent acceleration, F-body handling, and a
comfortable interior makes our crime fighting adventure a fun one.
We do maintain a list of things that don't work, and this includes
the driver's power lock, power mirrors that won't turn left, the
radio turns on but no sound, (cat got your tongue, KITT?), and the
odometer and the trip odometer not ticking off the miles. Beyond
that, the remaining functions operate as they should. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
TV and movie cars are some of the hottest selling vehicles in the
classic world. Who doesn't love seeing General Lee, the Starsky and
Hutch Torino, and of course, the DeLorean time machine at car
shows? Add KITT to the list and if you're from that generation, you
likely have some piece of Knight Rider merchandising and good
chance it's a black Trans Am with a red light on its nose. Take
your fandom to the next level with the KITT replica that's ready
for an interior transformation.
