Originally developed using the platform of the then current William
Heynes designed XJ saloon, the XJS was noted for its prominent rear
flying buttresses. The early styling was partially by Jaguar's
aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer, one of the first designers to apply
advanced aero principles to cars. Sayer died just before the XJS
body styling was frozen for production.
For consignment, a 1988 Jaguar XJS V12 coupe with a title verified
64,074 actual miles. The car presents in very good condition and if
you're ready to take on a V12 and all it has to offer, this one is
a fine example that starts and drives.
Exterior
Bathed in a British Racing Green, the flying buttress B pillars are
key to this car's design as is a sleek body style with thin looks,
yet a muscular stance which is often seen on expensive European
cars that are capable of high speeds. Within this thin body style
are straight panels and good gaps as well as a set of dual
headlamps upfront, bordered on the bottom by an integrated chrome
bumper with a black 5 MPH crash bumper inserted. This holds true on
the rear of the car too, and the chrome is excellently preserved.
Around the corner designed tail/turn signal rear lights frame the
rear panel, and trunk rear deck. 15-inch wheels carry 215/70R15
tires.
Interior
Wrapped in Barley leather, the door panels and front buckets and
rear 2 plus 2 seat present in very good condition. A mixture of
burl veneer adds highlight to the door panels, accenting the mid
console, and personality to the original dash where it is very
prevalent and it all presents in nice shape. Barrel style gauges
are flanked by traditional dials for the speedometer and
tachometer, all in black housing. An AM/FM/Cassette player in place
in front of the T-shifter with an external CD changer in a wooden
frame just behind the shifter. Beige carpet floods the floors with
protective carpeted mats and the trunk is fully finished and
contains a spare wheel and CD changer.
Drivetrain
The crowded bay contains the 5.3 liter V12 engine, rated at 286
horsepower and fuel injected via a Bosch Lucas digital EFI system.
The transmission is a TH400 GM 3-speed automatic that routes power
to the rear axle with 2.88 gears.
Undercarriage
The car is equipped with four wheel power disc brakes and front and
rear independent suspension with coil springs up front and
coilovers in back. Dual exhaust flows through stock style mufflers
before exiting through fluted tips in back.
Drive-Ability
This comfortable cat ran and drove well, and with a short lap
around the test loop, performed nearly flawlessly. We note the A/C
is not working but all other functions operate as they should on
this well balanced, smooth, and powerful grand touring car. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
