The 1984 Buick Grand National Turbocharged marked the beginning of
an American performance legend, blending understated style with
surprising power. Based on the Regal platform, this
sinister-looking coupe featured its now-iconic all-black exterior,
giving it a menacing presence on the street. Under the hood, it
packed a 3.8-liter turbocharged V6 engine, producing 200
horsepower-impressive for its era-and delivering strong
acceleration thanks to its forced-induction punch. Paired with a
4-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, the Grand
National offered a unique blend of muscle car attitude and modern
(for the time) turbo technology. Inside, it featured a
driver-focused cockpit with sporty touches, yet retained the
comfort expected from Buick. The 1984 model set the stage for the
even more powerful Grand Nationals to come, cementing its place as
one of the most memorable American performance cars of the 1980s.
