As soon as it was discovered how offroad capable the chassis and
suspension from a standard VW Beetle was, enthusiasts began
disassembling them and turn them into the offroad vehicles of their
dreams. Possibly the most popular build being the sandrail.
Throughout the years, many VW Beetles have been turned into these
very fun and capable offroad machines and this very well built
sandrail is no exception. This great Sandrail started its life as a
1959 Volkswagen Beetle (still retains the 1959 VIN) and was
purchased in 1985, then shipped to Indiana from California. At
which point, an Invader chassis was purchased and the
transformation from Beetle to Sandrail began. The Invader chassis
was assembled by Baja Imports of South Bend, IN and the initial
build was completed in 1989. Since then, this awesome sandrail has
been lovingly maintained and upgraded by the same owner for the
last 36 years. The sandrail is finished in a beautiful dark red
metallic paint that is in great condition for the age with only
minor chips and scratches present. The exterior of the sandrail is
nicely complimented by a set of auxiliary roll bar mounted fog
lamps, and a vintage set of polished wheels. This sandrail features
Black vinyl bucket seats with 4-point harnesses and diamond plate
aluminum floor pans. Powering this sandrail is its 1200cc Type 1
air-cooled boxer engine that has been upgraded with a big bore kit
and backed by its 4-speed manual transaxle. Both the engine and
transmission perform just as they should and deliver that loud and
fun driving experience you can only get in these vintage sandrails.
If you prefer a quieter ride, the sandrail does come with a
Supertrapp muffler that can be installed in the tailpipe. Included
in the sale of this sandrail is a front tow bar. If you are in the
market for a well built and very capable vintage sandrail that is
turn-key ready to enjoy and would present very well at any
cruise-in or car meet, then you will want to take a very close look
at this 1959 VW Sandrail.
