*1991 Land Rover Range Rover Classic *The Range Rover brand has
been around since the mid-1970s and upon its launch, the first car
they sold was a 2-door SUV. Although it was never officially
available in the United States, elsewhere in the world, the 2-doors
were sold right alongside the 4-door trucks that we know and love
and as time has gone along, they have built up quite a cult
following. Thanks to the 25-year import laws, these two-door Range
Rovers have begun to trickle into the United States but seeing one
is still a rarity that will excite any car enthusiast. This 1991
2-Door Range Rover was sold new in Portugal and has been completely
refreshed by Land Rover specialists Commonwealth Classics, starting
at their facility in Spain, and completed at their headquarters in
Marshall, VA. Known as a "Suffix Trail Rig" many of the appearance
pieces on the exterior of this Range Rover have been reverted to
those found on the earliest 2-door trucks known as the "Suffix"
series. Now powered by a performance built 3.9-liter V8 which is
paired to a 5-speed manual transmission, this Range Rover has been
turned into a tough looking off roader thanks to a complete
restoration of the body, interior and mechanicals.Finished in a
unique shade of Balmoral Green, the whole truck was stripped prior
to being repainted to an exceptionally high standard and at the
same time, all of the trim on the exterior of the vehicle was
refinished in black. Additionally, a black ARB front bumper, backed
by a Warn M800 winch was added in front along with a big set of
Hella off-road driving lamps, giving the truck proper off-road
credentials. The wheels have been upgraded with a set of black
16-inch Wolf-style steel wheels on knobby BFG Mud Terrain tires and
include a full size spare on a swing away rear carrier which is
attached to a black CWC rear bumper. The result of these
modifications is a truck that looks ready to conquer any trail, but
is not over the top and retains much of the class and elegance
associated with a vintage Range Rover. When new, the majority of
these 2-door Range Rovers were equipped with basic cloth or vinyl
seats on the interior, paired with thin carpets or rubber floors.
But when this example was at Commonwealth Classics, the interior
was thoroughly upgraded, using high quality distressed tobacco
brown leather around the vehicle. The seats feature this brown
leather on the outside but it is then paired with oatmeal Donegal
tweed centers that offer great comfort and a classic look. On the
floor, the carpet has been replaced with a high-end German square
weave fabric and on top, the headliner is upholstered in Alcantara.
The standard, spindly Land Rover steering wheel has been swapped
for an elegant Nardi 3-spoke unit which has been wrapped in the
same distressed tobacco brown leather as the rest of the interior.
In the center console sits a Land Rover Classic infotainment system
which offers Bluetooth connectivity, navigation and an AM/FM radio
and in this truck, is paired with upgraded speakers and amp.
Additionally, this truck comes with air conditioning, power
steering and power brakes so you really don't feel like you are
giving anything up when behind the wheel of this classic.Powering
this Range Rover is a 3.9-liter V8 which was rebuilt by
Commonwealth Classics in Spain prior to being sent to the United
States. The company refers to this engine package as the
"Performance 3.9" because in addition to the rebuild, it receives a
set of gas flowed heads, and a higher performance camshaft- these
keep the truck totally civilized to drive but according to
Commonwealth Classics, adds an estimated 20% gain in power. This
engine is paired to a 5-Speed manual gearbox which has also
benefited from a rebuild and sends power to a robust 2-speed
transfer case. Under the truck, the suspension has also been worked
over- a 2-inch lift courtesy of a set of Old Man Emu Shocks gives
excellent clearance off road while maintaining streetability and
when combined with the larger wheel and tire package, results in a
total 3 inch lift over standard.Trying to find a 2-door Range Rover
in the United States is no small task- the trucks that have been
imported over the years are typically held onto by enthusiasts and
they rarely make their way to market. This example checks that
rarity box, but has been made even more desirable thanks to the
hard work of the team from Commonwealth Classics who have created a
truck that is a pleasure to interact with, and looks absolutely
perfect in this specification. If you have ever wanted a classic
Range Rover, it is hard to beat this example.Watch a walkaround
