Vehicle Description
1964 Chevrolet Impala 2 Door Hardtop
The 1964 Chevrolet Impala represents one of the quintessential
symbols of American automotive design during the 1960s. Widely
celebrated for its sleek style, robust performance, and status as a
cultural icon, this vehicle continues to inspire admiration from
car enthusiasts and collectors alike. An astounding 884,600 Impalas
were produced in 1964 making them one of the most common cars on
the road at the time with the '64 being the last year of the third
generation.
For consignment, a 1964 Chevrolet Impala 2 door hardtop showing
92,769 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Along with just about
every component on this car, the engine build is fairly new, having
gone through an extensive process in 2022 to bring the mighty 409ci
V8 into ultimate performance fitness. This car not only looks the
part, but is packing some heat.
Exterior
Long sleek panels are made even sleeker with the coverage of two
stage Tuxedo Black paint, glimmering like a vat of ink with
polished trim that should not be overlooked as key contributors to
this car's visual presence. The distinctive nose and tail both wear
beautiful chrome bumpers and the rear fascia is adorned with a band
of turned metal trim over the exciting triple tail lights. Side
trim begins as a spear and that same turned metal on the front
fender and runs end to end, taking in the fuel filler door on its
way to the back. Dual headlights are perched in a ribbed base that
seamlessly connects to the grille where black inserts are replaced
by open space, inviting air into the engine bay. 15-inch Cragar
wheels with knock off caps hold staggered size tires and healthy
exhaust tips protrude out behind each rear wheel, while a long
antenna seems to be moved by the wind even when this black beauty
is standing still. The paint, trim, emblems, and glass are all in
spectacular condition and we do not find any imperfections on the
Impala.
Interior
SS emblems adorn the door panels which are crisp in design with
black stitched inserts over a carpeted lower, all in black, and
both presenting cleanly. Black bucket seats reflect that design
with ribbed inserts and the rear bench follows suit, both in nice
shape. Some slight patina on the steering wheel doesn't take away
from the clean dashboard, fronted by an old school tachometer on
the column, a horizontal speedometer, and a turned metal mid panel
with metal knobs and AM/FM radio. A triple gauge pod has been added
under the dash and the center console houses a polished shifter
skewed left for the driver in a turned metal faceplate. Black loop
carpet for the floor, a clean headliner up above, and a trunk that
is show ready, dressed in gray panels and displaying Jensen
speakers and some more SS emblems.
Drivetrain
More show quality under the hood, here sits the mighty 409ci V8
with a Howards cam, Icon .040 over forged pistons, Comp Cams dual
springs with 2.19i/1.735e valves, a Holley 4-barrel carburetor, and
Edelbrock intake. It's backed by a Saginaw 4-speed manual
transmission sending power to the rear axle with 3.36 gears. Four
wheel power drum brakes are onboard. The clean engine is topped
with 409 finned valve covers.
Undercarriage
Super clean underneath with no surfacer rust nor errant fluids to
speak of. There is some grime build up around the rear differential
that shows some sling from the U-joint, but even that matches the
uniform black underside. Dual exhaust runs cleanly into FlowMaster
mufflers and exits behind the rear wheels. Suspension consists of
coil springs up front and a 3 link with coil springs and a panhard
bar in back.
Drive-Ability
With a substantial chunk of change being spent on the engine build,
we expected it to start without a fuss, especially with newer
battery and starter, and our expectations were met. A fantastic
exhaust note is experienced at start up and upon applying some
throttle and off we go onto the test loop. The first thing we
notice is the shift pattern is semi reversed (1st is where 2nd
should be and vice versa, the same is noted with 3rd and 4th). But
the car pulls like a freight train and looks good doing it! She
tracks straight, handles well, and visibility is good, facilitated
by the open greenhouse and lack of B-pillars. We note the heater
blower and clock are not working but all other functions operate as
they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Impalas run quickly, as we all know, and Chevrolet Impalas,
especially of the '64 vintage don't graze at the mall for too long,
certainly not long enough to accumulate dust. This one checks all
the boxes, a spectacular build, a clean interior and exterior, the
"right" color, and an E-ticket ride that will separate you from the
herd. Your car hunting safari ends with you taking this Impala
home.
