Vehicle Description
1985 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham D'elegance
"The 1985 Fleetwood Brougham was in its sixth year of relatively
unchanged visual appearance, though the basic design had been
around since 1977.The d'Elegance package remained available on
both, and possessed some of the comfiest seats of the year, with a
"lawyer's office" button tufted, floating pillow style. 52,450
Fleetwood Brougham sedans and 3,000 coupes were built for the model
year." Hagerty
For consignment, a 1985 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance
edition with a title verified 68,678 actual miles. Long before
luxury brands like Lexus, Infiniti, and even Mercedes were
commonplace, Cadillac represented the epitome of large scale
opulence on the roads.
Exterior
A dark profile, just like the one used in the original sales
brochure flows over the d'Elegance edition, here in Dark Gray
Firemist Metallic, a step or two on this side of black and there's
plenty of polished trim to provide some contrast. A reflective
rocker panel hugs the bottom edge of the car and the shoulder line
trim goes to the back of the cabin and adheres to the steel bend of
the hood in a unique design. While we're here, we note lots of
inclusions to the paint on the hood leaving some spots exposed and
corroded. The stately front end features dual headlights, a wide
grille, and the chrome bumper with bumper guard and in the back,
Cadillac's epic column tail lights in chrome nacelles bookend
another chrome bumper below the decklid. A red pinstripe encircles
the car and 15-inch wheels are dressed up with wire wheel covers.
Along with the hood, other imperfections include a dent in and
around that rocker trim, cracks in the paint and other signs of
filler, and bubbling and flaking in numerous places.
Interior
Elegant indeed is the interior which is done in a merlot like dark
red and the velour and vinyl components on the door panel meet the
simulated woodgrain trim for a luxurious look and all four doors
present very nicely, including bold courtesy lights. Button tufted
velour coverage on the bucket seats is welcoming and warm and the
rear bench doesn't skimp on cushioning either. Woodgrain accents
everything on the dash including the steering wheel and instrument
panel where the horizontal speedometer lives. The center stack
features an AM/FM/Cassette radio over the push buttons of the
electronic climate control panel. Plush dark red carpet covers the
floor and transmission tunnel and is topped by Cadillac crested
carpeted mats. There's a sunroof up top and the trunk is finished
in clean gray cloth panels.
Drivetrain
We find clean conditions under the hood where a 4100HT 4.1 liter V8
resides good for 135 horsepower and fuel injected. A 200R4 4-speed
automatic transmission is bolted behind it and sends power to the
10 bolt axle with 3.42 gears. Power brakes are onboard as front
disc and rear drum.
Undercarriage
Remarkably clean underneath with the bare minimal surface rust and
some residual oil on the pans. The newer looking exhaust is a
single system that intersects a stock style muffler and a resonator
before terminating. Suspension consists of coil springs in front
and a 4 link with coil springs in back.
Drive-Ability
Comfortable just doesn't fully describe the softness of the seats
and we can imagine sitting here for long trips. Now, there is an
issue with the driver's seat as the front tilt down function is not
working. Meanwhile, the 4.1 comes to life eagerly and we float this
late model land yacht across the test loop where it tracks
straight, the 75 series flattening the imperfections on our
asphalt, and the V8 providing good power through the stretch. The
A/C is not working but all other functions on board operate as they
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
The interior of this car presents almost pristinely and is like
stepping into a time capsule from 1985 when velour was the material
of choice, tufted seats were the luxury option, and simple, analog
operation felt like state of the art. Rear passengers will feel
like royalty and you'll be happy to chauffeur them around in this
beautiful Fleetwood Brougham. It's back to the future with this
fine automobile!
