1927 Dodge Brothers Flatbed Truck

During the early 1900s, the name Dodge became a household name among consumers in our American culture. The Dodge Brothers, John and Horace were born in Niles, Michigan. They were great pioneers and helped put America on wheels during the early days of automotive manufacturing. Unfortunately, both brothers died within months of each other in 1920 and without the founders, the company was not able to duplicate its success, and financial advisors recommended that the Dodge Brothers' widows sell their interests in the company in 1925 but the name was used until 1930.

For auction, a 1927 Dodge Brothers flatbed truck showing half a mile on the odometer but of course, the true miles are not known. Despite the mileage, it's the years of exposure that has taken its toll and the truck now presents just this side of a shell.

Exterior
Remnants of black paint endure on the cab, dulled by the sun but the panels and fenders are impressively straight. The metal of the radiator surround and light rings is oxidized having lost its luster long ago. The 21-inch wooden spoked wheels have seen better days too, but they still hold up the truck. A long and wide running board stops behind where the cab would end and that's where a wooden frame and sheets of plywood intimate the purposeful original build of the truck as a flatbed. The wood is warped, worn, and weathered and is probably not up to structural tasks and the steel frame below it, of course, is rusted.

Interior
What's left of the interior are the spokes of the steering wheel and its column, and three vintage gauges for amps, oil pressure, and speed. There the shaft of the shifter also as it rises from the now visible transmission.

Drivetrain
There is some of the engine present, looking like a rusted relic you'd find in the New Mexico desert. It's a 212ci L-head inline four cylinder with a 1-barrel carburetor and once putting out 35 horsepower. The 3-speed manual is still attached.

Undercarriage
Mechanical drum brakes would be on the back only while leaf springs make up the suspension front and rear.

Drive-Ability
This old work truck is not going anywhere on its own. It has enough left to offer a glimpse into early American trucking.
