The Galaxie was introduced part way through the 1959 model year, so
some of these cars are found at car shows labeled as a Fairlane 500
or a Fairlane 500 Galaxie. But with the mid year introduction, a
new Thunderbird look and formal two door fixed hardtop was the
foundation of the Galaxie sub series, with Sunliner convertible and
Skyliner retractable gaining the nomenclature as well. Few recall
that the Galaxie name and trim level was also applied to two and
four door post and four door hardtop body styles, as well. Thx

For auction, a 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie Skyliner showing
79,500 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Twenty years ago
Skyliners were one of the hottest cars in the collector market, and
while values have cooled a bit, their coolness certainly
hasn't.Hardtop convertibles are common today, but in 1959, it was
truly space age and special. This car has no keys and when the
engine was found to be seized.
Exterior
Once gleaming Raven Black paint is now weathered with plenty of
patina and surface rust about, especially on the trunk lid which is
rusted end to end. Glimmers of greatness prevail including the
design of the rear fascia with distinctive round tail lights with
reverse light atop the fins and in profile, the long sweeping
decklid is accentuated by the quarter panel trim. The grille is
intact and some of the major chrome pieces are in decent shape and
both bumpers retain their rubber fronted dagmars. Fender ornaments
prevail ahead of the curved windshield while the Skyliner band
anchoring the C-pillars is a true field mark.
Interior
Red and black is the palette on the inside beginning with the door
panels which are quintessentially 1950's with bold patterns and
layers of color and both doors present in rough shape with the
passenger door faring worse and its window is cracked. The seats
are constructed of vinyl and cloth and while the front split bench
is in poor condition, the rear seat is in stand out condition
compared to the rest of the interior which is faded and tattered,
as in the case of the package shelf, or simply weathered. The dash
and instrument cluster show patina and discoloration but appears to
be complete including all of the ivory plastic knobs. There is an
AM radio and clock in the center and the floor is covered with a
rubber mat. Spare parts, hub caps, trim pieces and other various
items now reside in the roof's sizable stowage area.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a rusty and weathered 332ci V8 once rated at 225
horsepower and fueled via a 2-barrel carburetor. Behind it, a
Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic which sends power to the Ford 9"
rear with 2.91 gears.
Undercarriage
We first note that the frame of the car is rotted in a few areas.
Suspension includes coil springs up front and leaf springs in the
back and drum brakes are employed both front and back.
Drive-Ability
There are no keys for the car and upon manual turning we found the
engine tobe siezed.
