The 1959 Edsel Corsair is a classic American automobile, part of
Ford's short lived Edsel brand. It was a step up from the Edsel
Ranger, offering more trim, a fancier interior, and additional
standard options. Distinctive features included a horizontal
grille, wraparound windshield, and tailfins.
For auction, a 1959 Edsel Corsair 4 door hardtop showing 77,192
miles, but the true miles are unknown. This green and white Corsair
presents in fair condition and mostly intact and the engine does
turn over on starting fluid.
Exterior
Single stage Mist Green paint of mixed quality and tone covers the
car with the decklid in particular looking cleaner than the
remaining panels. Most metalwork is in decent shape with some rust
and pitting on other parts, again a mixed bag but mostly complete.
The car's distinctive trim includes a white stripe bordered by
polished spears and adorned in the wide section with a geometric
aluminum panel that contours to the white stripe's frame. Tail
lights protrude just past the body panels shadowing the shape of
the horizontal fins above them, while a chrome bumper mirrors the
shape of the decklid itself. Curved glass makes up the windshield
and the rear window for a bright greenhouse and a minimal C-pillar.
Fender ornaments ride the same surface as the side mirrors and the
raise in the hood conforms with the horse collar center grille that
defines the Edsel.
Interior
Varying shades of green alternate to create once handsome door
panels, now tattered and torn and missing hardware. Corsair is
embossed in the top vinyl panel of the front door for a nice
attention to detail. While both bench seats of vinyl and cloth are
torn and dirty, they are complete enough to use as reference for
any restoration efforts. Edsel's interesting instrument panel is an
array of shapes and materials that all work together well, here
with lots of patina but appearing complete under a topper that's in
decent condition. There's an AM radio and clock to the right and
ornamental metal trim bars along the lower green dash. The floors
are barren and body colored and the trunk is also uncovered and
currently houses an external plastic gas tank.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a weathered 332ci V8 with a Holley 4-barrel
carburetor and a Mile-O-Matic 2-speed automatic transmission that
sends power to the rear axle with 2.91 gears.
Undercarriage
The car is fitted with dual exhaust and stock style mufflers while
drum brakes are employed at all four wheels. Suspension consists of
coil springs up front and leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
The car turns over and starts on starting fluid.
