"Go sporty, with the '63 Corvair. The family car with the sports
car flair. Like every Chevrolet car for '63, Corvair offers
important advances in durability, reliability, and economy of
maintenance. Go for the Go Show at your Chevrolet dealers one stop
shopping center now!" From the 1963 Chevrolet television
commercial.
For auction, a 1963 Chevrolet Corvair 900 2 door coupe showing
39,076 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This classic compact
car presents in good condition and runs and drives. There's a
robust network of Corvair enthusiasts around the country that
includes clubs and aftermarket support.
Exterior
The once shimmering Silver Blue two stage paint now presents with
patina, faded panels, and some staining by the fuel door, but in
general, the body appears straight. Both chrome bumpers are in very
good condition and the rocker trim is intact. The dual tail lights
are missing their lenses and the right headlights are missing the
distinctive bezel. The roofline is bubble-like with no B-pillar and
curved glass at both ends. Some emblems are missing but the
dealership emblem is still present under the louvered deck lid.
Interior
The blue interior is a mix of nice components along with those with
patina or damage. The door panels are worn especially where
ornamental buttons would be and the vinyl is a bit tattered. The
driver's bucket seat is in very good condition while the passenger
bucket and rear bench show staining and some tears. The upper of
the rear bench is a nice shape however. Patina coats the steering
wheel and dash but the instrument cluster remains fairly nice. The
AM radio is missing some knobs and the glove box door is missing.
The front trunk is barren and generally clean with a few rust spots
and housing several reservoirs.
Drivetrain
In back, and next to the spare tire, is a 145ci flat six cylinder,
air cooled and producing 102 horsepower with dual 1-barrel
carburetors onboard. A Powerglide 2-speed automatic keeps the power
out back and routes it through 3.55 gears.
Undercarriage
Dual exhaust comes off of the flat six and enters a stock style
muffler before exiting through a single pipe. Coil spring
suspension is up front and a swing arm with coil springs occupy the
rear. Drum brakes are on all four wheels.
Drive-Ability
The car starts and drives well through our short course and on old
tires, we limit the distance. We notice the throttle sticks and the
horn is not working, but this car otherwise functions well.
