Vehicle Description
1960 Chevrolet Impala Convertible
"A more conservative approach, with "jet smooth" lines, evident
with the aircraft inspired side trim. Chevrolet changed much of the
body lines from the more wild 1959's. The new look for 1960 suited
the glamorous top of the line Impala, as Chevrolet reshaped and
separated the "bat wing" tail fins, and added 3 round tail lamps to
the rear. The 1960 Chevrolet Impala also became the best selling
automobile in the US and continued to hold that position for the
next decade." Thx oldride.com
For consignment, a 1960 Chevrolet Impala convertible showing
117,445 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Stunning, iconic,
and an ultimate classic, the features and design incorporated into
the '60 Impala were so well received, nearly 500,000 Impalas in
varying body styles were sold in 1960.
Exterior
Ermine White, named for an Arctic dwelling mammal, coats this car
is two stage glossiness, complemented by lots of metal trim and
instantly recognizable ends. In front, the crossed flags emblem
occupies a rather pedestrian grille between dual headlight,
underscored by a bright chrome bumper and all that front metal
gives the car a monochromatic icy look. Fender ornaments jut up in
front, followed by the curved glass of the windshield, also framed
in polished steel. The shoulder line starts off innocent enough,
only to become the wing in back over a deep cover in the body,
delineated by the black painted contrail of the jet shaped
ornamentation piercing the door as it flies forward. In back, those
gull like wings provide a mantle over the triple light
configuration based in a ribbed grille of its own. Once again, the
bumper shines bright below it all and dual antennae above add to
the cool factor. The black canvas top is in good shape and overall,
the car is immaculate. Imperfections include some pitted metal on
the wheel covers, fender ornaments, and lower portion of a
bumper.
Interior
If you thought the outside was special, check out the inside
beginning with the fantastic door panels with black and white
hounds tooth insert, black vinyl panels, white accent stripe, and
polished trim. The split bench shares these materials and colors in
an attractive and artful layout with the rear bench following suit,
and both are in excellent condition. A boomerang shaped horn ring
resides in the black plastic steering wheel ahead of a busy
dashboard with five gauges in their own cylinders over an aluminum
back mid panel housing knobs and levers. An AM radio lives in the
center and nice black carpet floods the floor. The trunk is also
spotless and houses a spare white wall tire.
Drivetrain
We're met with show worthy conditions under the hood where a 348ci
V8 resides, topped by three 2-barrel carburetors and rated at a
respectable 335 horsepower. All those ponies are routed through a
Turboglide 2-speed automatic transmission which sends it spinning
to the rear axle and 3.08 gears. Brake configuration here is drums
all around.
Undercarriage
Also spectacularly clean underneath with just a film of oil on the
pans on this otherwise dry underside. Dual exhaust travel through
stock style mufflers, then head east and west to exit behind each
rear wheel. Suspension is found to be coil springs up front and a 3
link with coil springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
The vinyl houndstooth is a nice touch and the interior is not only
roomy but provides panoramic like views out the front through the
wrap around glass. The canvas top slopes down and forces the use of
the side mirrors to catch blind spots, but with the top down of
course, the sky's the limit. The big V8 runs and sounds excellent,
providing plenty of jet like thrust off the line and tracking
straight. That is, until we brake and find the car pulls hard to
the right. Beyond that, all functional items on board operated as
intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
If you don't want attention and instead want to blend in the with
crowd, even at car shows, this one is not for you. Today, this is
almost exotic in its design and absolutely wild and this one
present in show ready condition inside, outside, and upside down.
Move with gazelle-like intent to obtain this Impala and don't be
left in the dust.
