Vehicle Description
2001 Plymouth Prowler Convertible
Chrysler engineers were given free rein to design whatever they
wanted in a "hot rod" or "sportster" type vehicle. Chrysler's
design and international director Thomas C. Gale said his "love for
1930's era hot rods inspired Chrysler's latest design triumph, the
retro styled Plymouth Prowler". An early influence is credited to a
Chrysler sponsored project at the Art Center College of Design that
resulted in a thesis by Douglas "Chip" Foose that included drawings
of a retro roadster.
For consignment, a 2001 Plymouth Prowler showing 12,805 miles, but
the true miles are unknown. Maintenance items have been addressed
including a new battery, belts and hoses, shocks, as well as some
cosmetic items added such as caliper covers and pinstriping.
Exterior
With sculpted lines, a U shaped horizontal ribbed grille, front
fenders that go with the flow of the front wheels, and projector
beam headlights, you are experiencing a fine mix of bygone design
cues, and modern technology. A chopped height canvas convertible in
black covers the 2 seater, and as we go to the back a curved rear
deck, more sculpted panels of the sides, fenders, and fiberglass
bumpers and it all terminates with dual chrome exhaust tips.
17-inch front and 20-inch rear chromed 5 spoke wheels show off
those red caliper covers which pick up nicely on the red pinstripe
that encircles the car, and the staggered tires have an early 2019
date code. The condition of the trim and Prowler Silver Metallic
paint is fantastic and the only imperfections we find are some curb
rash on the wheels.
Interior
Inside, the past has been left behind and now for the passengers
the dual high backed buckets draped in Ebony leather with
integrated roll bars in the headrests, sit snugly within the
compartment. These buckets have nicely stitched smooth panels, and
some extra padded bolsters for that curve carving which will
inevitably go on when behind the wheel of this speedster. A center
console races forward to the dash, and houses a large glovebox, the
shifter, and autostick detent. Moving upward we note an upgraded
AM/FM/CD radio with a pop out screen above the A/C dials. Directly
above the center is the surfboard shaped silver faceplate that
houses the gauges, with the speedo in the center with a digital
readout, while on top of the steering column is a factory installed
AutoMeter tachometer. A flip up rear lid reveals the covered area
for the top and just a little storage and there's a CD changer
behind the passenger seat. Black carpet floods the floors, and a
note to the convertible top the rear window is glass.
Drivetrain
Open the tapering hood to find the 3.5 liter V6 with EFI capable of
generating 254hp. The bay is cleaned and dominated by a plastic
shroud.Out back is a 4-speed automatic and a 3.89 rear axle spins
the big 20-inch rear tires. Four wheel power disc brakes are
supplied to the retro rod. Our consignor notes timing belt and
tensioners, hoses, belts, water pump, gas tank vapor hoses, and
battery were all replaced sometime in the recent past.
Undercarriage
All clean and rust free on the floor pans and the frame which is
aluminum X frame material. Independent coil over suspension is seen
all around with chrome cladding up front, as are power disc brakes
on both the front and rear. A stainless OEM dual exhaust, all rust
free, can be seen working their way rearward through a central
tunnel, terminating at the chromed tips.
Drive-Ability
This car started right up and on the test track performed
beautifully. It has snappy acceleration, good handling, good
braking, and a smooth, fairly quiet cruise. The central dash calls
back the design from the 30's and is much different from the
average modern car, like your daily driver. All functions were
working just fine, and the interior was spacious and comfortable.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Between 1997 and 2002, just 11,702 Prowlers were built making it an
uncommon car. For 2001, just 3,142 were built making each year's
model rare. These are getting a second wind as the critics have
mostly gone silent and the actual quality and uniqueness of
Prowlers is being recognized, frequently making future collectible
lists. We think they're collectible today especially when not over
customized like this one.
