Vehicle Description
1970 Chevrolet Nova 2 Door Sedan
"Not too small. Not too large. Which makes a lot of people happy.
Small enough to make long trips seem like the gas economy runs. Big
enough for up to six adults and their luggage". From the 1970 sale
brochure. 254,242 Novas were produced and sold in 1970 and of them,
19,588 were SS performance models while a great majority were
commuter based cars including 2 door and 4 door models.
For consignment, a 1970 Chevrolet Nova 2 door sedan showing 98,293
miles, but the true miles are unknown. Clean inside and out, this
X-platform representative, now dressed as an SS350, is an all
around solid and basic build that will scratch that itch you have
to own a third gen Nova.
Exterior
The once ubiquitous Nova comes as you with an SS emblem centered on
the finely grated grille, between single headlights that can appear
both pedestrian and aggressive, depending on how loud your Nova is.
Two stage Tuxedo Black paint can also be construed as more
aggressive than some of the common colors of the day, and here a
polished rocker panel, window trim, and visible exhaust tips add
some reflective contrast. Gills on the fender, topped by NOVA in
groovy 70's font, are matched in ornamental coolness with mock hood
vents atop the flat surface. 15-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels carry
staggered size tires with the wider rears tucking under the wheel
opening, sporting some old school traction bars. Metal and paint
are fantastic and imperfections noted include various scratches and
some touched up chips around a wheel opening.
Interior
Solid black door panels are dressed with a single white stripe,
we'll call it a racing stripe, along with a Nova metal name plate.
The black vinyl split bench seat in front is in really nice shape
and the rear seat presents in similar fashion. An auto parts store
vinyl steering wheel wrap could use a refresh and the column wears
an added tachometer ahead of the horizontal speedometer that was
GM's mainstay back in the day. You get an analog clock and slide
levers for the fan control, along with an updated AM/FM/CD player
and a dual gauge pod for oil pressure and water temp. A tall
straight Hurst shifter awaits the driver surrounded by a rubberized
floor covering under a stitched headliner in good condition. The
trunk is clean and mostly barren with a small mat and a spare under
a Nova SS vinyl cover.
Drivetrain
We've got a clean engine on board, a 350ci V8 with a Holley
4-barrel and a Saginaw 4-speed manual transmission. Power is routed
to the 10 bolt rear axle and drum brakes on all four wheels are
there to slow things down. Headers begin the exhaust process in the
bay.
Undercarriage
We've got clean driver quality conditions underneath with some
residual oil on the pans, some grease on the knuckles and pumpkin
along with general patina. A robust Mr. Gasket finned differential
covers spices things up as does the dual exhaust which flows
through Xlerator mufflers on its way past the rear bumper via
chrome tips. Suspension includes coil springs up front and leaf
springs with traction bars in the back. Some surface rust, but none
of the nasty stuff.
Drive-Ability
The 350 is a quick starter and we manipulate the Saginaw using the
ball handled shifter and off we go onto the test loop where the
engine runs well, the car tracks straight, and handles nicely.
There's good power here and the bench seat is roomy and
unrestrictive. Of course, you'll have to hold on around turns, but
that's a small price to pay for comfort. Other than the clock, all
functions operate as they should on this super Nova, and we row it
back to the bay. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Our review confirms it, this is a solid little runner and a great
looking car that was literally everywhere back in the day, when GM
was the choice of your father and grandfather. We've come a long
way in 55 years, but the nostalgia of once common cars is
irreplaceable and this is a fine example.
