INTRODUCTION: Only 640 Darts were built with a 440 shoehorned in
them! They all had an M in the VIN number which this one has. It
has been meticulously restored to like new. They were all made with
automatics, this one has been upgraded to a 4-speed manual. The 440
big block is correct.
HISTORY: Mr Norm, from the famous Mopar performance dealer, Grand
Spaulding Dodge, requested a high performance Dart from Chrysler.
The car arrived in 1967 with just a 273! Mr Norm said he wanted a
383, Chrysler said it couldn't be done. So Mr Norm had his own shop
build it. Chrysler learned of this and ended up building a 383 Dart
for 1968. To keep up the pace, in 1969 Mr Norm wants a 440!
Chrysler choose to have Hurst Performance take on the task of
building these special cars. They required a special K member,
motor mounts, modification to the blocks for the mounts, exhaust
manifolds, oil pan and heat shielding. Each car was ordered
virtually the same. They were all automatics with bucket seats and
consoles. Power steering, power disc brakes and certainly air
conditioning were not available.
EXTERIOR: The body impressed me! It is straight with no rust. The
panels align square and flush, the doors shut like new. It has the
twin GT bulges on the hood. Painted correct R4 red without a vinyl
top, (I know, it looks like orange). Black bumblebee stripe has the
GT Sport call out. The chrome and trim is shiny and straight. The
front and rear window were replaced. The weatherstrips and seals
were replaced. Sitting on painted rims with poverty hubcaps wrapped
in reproduction Wide Oval redline tires.
INTERIOR: It is restored to excellent condition inside! The seats
have been recushioned and reupholstered. The door panels, armrests,
window cranks all look like they've been replaced. The upper metal
trim is painted a high gloss black finish. The carpet and the
headliner were replaced. The dash pad looks new, the instrument
panel, gauges, knobs and original radio look very clean. The center
console is a new reproduction and it has that wonderful 4-speed
sticking out of it. Original seat belts front and back. Interior
lights work, glovebox and rear shelf were replaced.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: It is highly detailed to factory condition! At
the heart of it is the correct 440-375 Magnum shoe horned in there!
It has correct casting # and date. The matching VIN is stamped on
the block, it may be a restamp. It looks to be stock: manifolds,
valve covers, distributor and even reproduction spark plug wires.
The air cleaner is restored with the crinkle finish and 440 Magnum
pie tin. All of the components look clean and proper. It has a 7
blade fan, reproduction hoses and clamps. The washers are hooked
up, battery is secured, horns work etc. It is detailed real nice
and the engine bay is painted slick.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: Under the trunk lid and the jamb have been
painted shiny. Inside is all clean metal painted orange. It has a
reproduction mat and weatherstrip.
UNDERSIDE: The steering and suspension look like they've been
completely redone. The fuel system was replaced including the tank.
It has a new factory type dual exhaust system with the correct
polished square tips. The brakes have been redone and features disc
in front. Looking up at the motor it is spotless, it looks like it
has the rare oil pan unique to the 440 M code. The casting codes
and dates are proper for this car. All M code Darts came with an
automatic transmission, this one was upgraded with an 833 4-speed.
In back it has a 3.91 Sure Grip rear end. This car really launches
at the green light! The floors are all solid, painted black.
SERVICE: We take pride in our cars and reputation. Therefore, we
built a 2 million dollar, 10,000 square ft service center, and
hired a team of technicians to work it. This is so we can sell you
the best cars within reason.
For nearly 30 years, I, Jay Grams, have personally written the
highlights for almost every car in our collection. What I provide
is my professional opinion based on my experience with these
vehicles. However, opinions can vary, and I strongly recommend a
personal inspection to form your own view. Our sales team is always
available to answer any questions you may have. One great option is
to request a personalized walk-around video, where we can showcase
the car and share our team's insights. **Our cars are displayed
within a museum setting. If you are interested in a specific
vehicle, please schedule an appointment with a salesperson to view
it. Without an appointment, there is an admission fee to enter the
showroom. If you decide to purchase a car, your admission will be
refunded, and you'll receive a one-year museum membership.
