Homologation models are often considered to be some of the finest
examples of street cars, sharing direct motorsport lineage with
their track-racing alter egos while fulfilling the racing
requirements for entry. It's not uncommon for certain homologation
models to get critical acclaim and a cult following, but the BMW
3.0 CSL is one of those cars that has maintained its position as
one of the most popular Bavarian Motor Works cars of all time.
Lightweight, elegant design, and tactile feedback driving
experience all combine to reward its driver with an unforgettable
experience.
The 3.0 CSL differs in a multitude of ways, from construction to
driving dynamics. Introduced in May of 1972, the "L" in the name
meant leicht (German for light). This weight reduction was achieved
through using thinner steel to produce the body, the deletion of
soundproofing and trim, using aluminum alloy doors, hood, trunk
lid, and Perspex side windows. Lightweight fiberglass bumpers were
also used in favor of heavy metal ones. The first original CSLs
used an engine with a displacement of 3,003cc which allowed their
race car alter egos to participate in the "over three litre" racing
category. Highly successful in European racing, the CSL competed in
the Group 2 category in the European Touring Car Championship, with
CSL drivers winning the Drivers title six times in the years 1973,
and 1975 to 1979.
This 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL was produced on November 28th, 1972 by BMW
according to a copy of a BMW Group Classic letter, and was first
delivered to BMW importer Wolfgang Denzel Kraftfahrzeuge AG in
Vienna, Austria on December 6th, 1972. Optioned in Polaris Silver,
color code, 060, the car remained in Europe for most of its life.
One of its most recent caretakers had the car completely restored
by a German BMW E9 specialist. During this time the car was
completely refinished in Polaris Silver, and the matching-numbers
engine was completely rebuilt. Care was taken to the original
lightweight aluminum body panels, specific to 3.0 CSLs. The water
pump and coolant hoses were replaced, the alternator rebuilt, and
new ignition-related equipment including spark plugs, rotor, and
ignition cables. It was noted that the wood dashboard is original
and without cracks.
In 2017 the interior of the 3.0 CSL was restored by Oldenzaal
Classics in the Netherlands, which included the front and rear
seats reupholstered in period-correct fabric along with the carpet.
It was then acquired by a New York-based collector who imported the
car along with a BMW 2002 Turbo from Europe, and kept them in his
collection for several years. The cars then found a new caretaker
for a number of years, before arriving at Canepa's doors.
Upon arriving at Canepa, the 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL was thoroughly
inspected, cosmetically and mechanically as a part of the "Canepa
Difference" process. In excellent condition, the car was
immediately sent to Canepa's detail department in order to enhance
the luster of the restored Polaris Silver paint, along with the
cleaning of all surfaces and interior. The underside of the vehicle
was detailed by hand, as was the interior. It received a foam pad
polish to enhance the sheen of the paintwork, leaving the 3.0 CSL
with an even better shine. The car was mechanically inspected, and
found to be in excellent condition. Once complete, the 1972 BMW 3.0
CSL joined Canepa's collector car inventory, ready for its new
owner to take it home and enjoy the best of Bavarian Motor Group's
early 1970s offerings.
