The Fleetwood Body Company of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, was founded
by Harry Urich in the nineteenth century. It began as a small
community of craftsmen founded by Henry Fleetwood, Esq. of
Penwortham, near Lancaster, England, (the Fleetwood family
flourished in England in the 17th and 18th centuries). When the
Sixty Special Series was retired in 1977, the Fleetwood Brougham
took its place as Cadillac's largest owner driven sedan model
through 1986. The "d'Elegance" and "Talisman" sub models were also
sometimes used to designate upgraded option packages.
Up for auction is a 1987 Cadillac Fleetwood 4 door sedan showing
32,045 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Based on information
from the owner, these miles are very likely accurate. This car
presents in excellent condition with the typical cracking of the
bumper filler pieces, replacements for which are available from
aftermarket sources. The car starts and runs.
Exterior
Long straight panels and large horizontal surfaces are cream
colored, officially Chamois here, and presents in good condition.
The cream vinyl top is also in nice shape, including the Cadillac
crest on the C-pillar and a coach lamp on each B-pillar. Wire wheel
covers adorn each of the 15-inch wheels matching in brightness the
trim piece that runs from the hood and around the cabin. Out back,
robust chrome tail light nacelles surround the vertical slit lenses
and bookend the large straight chrome bumper. The rear windows are
tinted limo style, while the side mirrors are finished in brushed
nickel presentation. As noted, all bumper fillers are cracked but
the rest of the car presents nicely.
Interior
Tan leather floods the luxurious doors and d'Elegance is
embroidered into each, indicating the upgraded design option.
Simulated wood trim is everywhere, including around each element of
the doors where chrome and brushed nickel metal sets a classy
contrast. Inside, the split bench of tan leather is biscuit tufted
and the uppers are pillow topped and in very good condition while
the rear seats share the material and color and barely look used.
Rear passengers are afforded handles on the back of the front seats
along with nicely designed pockets, along with a lighter and
ashtray for each side. The steering wheel and dash dominated by the
woodgrain is in excellent condition and the center stack contains
an integrated AM/FM/Cassette radio and an electronic climate
control panel. The plush tan carpet below is dirty and shows some
wear on the driver's side but can likely be refreshed. The rear
view mirror has become detached and the headliner is sagging. An
enormous trunk is finished with gray cloth panels and houses two
spare tires, with plenty of room left over.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 307ci V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor. It's
backed by a 200R4 4-speed automatic that sends power to the 10 bolt
axle with 2.73 gears. The engine bay is dusty and has some surface
rust but is fully intact.
Undercarriage
Single exhaust runs through a stock style muffler while power
brakes are supplied as front disc and rear drum. Suspension
consists of coil springs in front and a 4 link with coil springs in
back and we do note some sag in the back.
Drive-Ability
The car starts and runs and on a short trip around the loop,
performs well. The 215/75R15 white wall tires have some age to them
so we didn't flog the Caddy too much. We do note that the A/C is
not working. Even so, this represents a fantastic opportunity for
bidders.
