In the lexicon of American culture, the idea of a hot rod instantly
conjures up an image in your mind. In its classic and purest sense,
odds are that image looks a lot like this 1932 Ford Highboy
Roadster LS1. With just 7,851 miles since its build, this old
school drop top has been repainted using late-model Lexus colors,
Phantom Grey and Silver Strata Metallic courtesy of Dupont. A pair
of burgundy racing stripes is the perfect complement to the
matching canvas top.
Inside, the burgundy trend continues. A pair of clean-looking door
panels bookend a large leather bench seat. At the same time, a
banjo-style Grant sits ahead of a six-pod Classic Instruments gauge
cluster featuring a large 140 mph speedometer and a 7,000 rpm
tachometer, with a pair of auxiliary gauges flanking it on either
side. A trick-looking brushed-aluminum HVAC control panel provides
heat or air conditioning with ease and looks at home next to a
modern AM/FM/AUX head unit that pumps out tunes through
door-mounted speakers.
Hiding under that sleek hood, we find a beautiful 5.7-liter LS1 V-8
engine. Using lightweight aluminum for its block and heads,
combined with a 10.2:1 compression ratio and six-bolt mains, this
modern overhead valve small block pumped out up to 350 horsepower
in stock form from the factory. Add to that package a set of shorty
headers, true-dual exhaust, and a set of Glasspack-style mufflers,
and you have a beautiful blend of old and new school power to
create a truly unique kind of hot rod. Those ponies are routed
through a 4L60E four-speed automatic transmission before being
transposed to the tarmac via its chrome-covered rear end.
