In terms of pure visual recognition, nothing comes close to the
iconic Jeep brand. Before the Wrangler came along, the Jeep CJ
series was literally a civilian version (CJ stood for Civilian
Jeep) of the military variants, which meant it was a more driver-
and passenger-friendly version. First introduced in 1945 with the
Willys CJ-2A, this 1986 Jeep CJ7 4X4 represents the final year for
the hardcore CJ lineup. Decked out in its vibrant red exterior,
this CJ7 is equipped with an easy-to-remove vinyl top and doors, a
stout double-tube front bumper, and matching tubular side
steps.
Inside, we find a typical Spartan Jeep interior. An aftermarket
center console separates a pair of supportive bucket seats. A
three-spoke, power-assisted steering wheel sits atop a tilt column,
while push/pull and twist knobs are used for HVAC controls. An
upgraded set of AutoMeter gauges, featuring a large 120 mph
speedometer and a 7,000 rpm tachometer, sits closest to the driver,
while a quartet of auxiliary gauges provides all the pertinent
information required to monitor the engine. Two twist knobs are
ready to let you fold down the front windshield if the desire hits
you.
Under the hood, we find a 350 cubic-inch V-8 engine. Fed using
throttle-body injection, this small block dispenses with spent
gases through a set of Headman headers that feed into a dual
exhaust capped off with a pair of FlowMaster mufflers to give this
Jeep an impressive and throaty growl. Power is routed through a
tried-and-true four-speed manual transmission before heading out to
the Dana rear axle that transfers those ponies to the pavement via
a set of 15-inch wheels shod in big 33-inch BFG All-Terrain T/A
tires. Engage the front axle using the manually-locking front hubs,
and all four wheels are ready to tackle any terrain you can throw
at them.
