For Sale: 1978 Chevrolet Camaro in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1978 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Coupe

"After 4 years of the extruded aluminum bumpers, an all new body color urethane front & rear fascia was finally added to the car. The rear tail lights were redesigned as well, now incorporating 3 color lenses on either side of the fuel door in the center. The Camaro wasn't just continuing to blow the competition away on the street, but it passed the rival Mustang in the showroom again, outselling the Ford 247,437 to 179,039. There was no competition." For consignment, a 1978 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 coupe with a title verified 191,924 actual miles, a rebuilt 350 cuber with aluminum heads and an Edelbrock carburetor, and its numbers matching 3-speed automatic transmission. If you were in high school in the 80's, you were probably hot for these as they started showing up in the school parking lot, including one notable school, Ridgemont High. Well, Spicoli, it's time to reignite the flame!

Exterior
You can't miss this one in Bright Yellow single stage paint augmented by Z28 stripes in yellow, orange and black, initially around the distinctive hood scoop, across the spoiler, along the rocker panels, and over the wheel openings, missing from the left front fender. Embossed style font is used for the Z28 decals on the fenders with matching colors, under a louvered side duct, glorious 80's styling at its best! Old school mods include the 15-inch Cragar SS wheels with staggered size tires with a mid 2021 date code, the traction bars peeking from underneath, and the big honkin' exhaust pipes out the back, you know your Z had the same stuff! Imperfections include some overall dullness to the paint, some mismatched panels, missing decals as noted, a tear or two in the Endura, a repair to the rocker panel, and some peeling paint and surface rust at the corner of a door and adjacent panel corner.

Interior
Your standard F-body doors are clean and tidy here, in black vinyl and roll up windows. The bucket seats are as ordered, the desirable black and white houndstooth cloth inserts and black vinyl sides, trim code 19B for those who know. Other than some light compression on the driver's seat, all seats, including the 2+2's in back, are in great shape. Trans Ams had their hobnail pattern at this time, but Chevrolet gets the win for the plaid cloth. Meanwhile, the rope wrapped steering wheel is in place, sharing its column with an added tachometer, then leading to the aluminum backed instrument panel, curved and canted towards the driver, the A/C panel to the left of the column. In '78, the Kenwood AM/FM/Cassette player onboard would have been state of the art and is mounted over a dual gauge pod with oil and water information. From there, the center console houses a B&M shifter, the coolest interior mod of the day, and the typical storage compartment/armrest behind it. Low pile black carpet covers the floor protected by black carpeted mats with a bright yellow Z28 logo for front and rear occupants. A fitted black mat covers the trunk floor and a space saver spare is onboard.

Drivetrain
Moroso valve covers and heat wrapped headers cling to the clean 350ci V8 under the hood, with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carb and aluminum heads topping the block. Behind it is the numbers matching TH350 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the 10 bolt axle with 3.42 gears. Power brakes are standard, discs in front and drums in the rear.

Undercarriage
Clean driver quality underneath with minimal surface rust and some oil noted on the pan with residual dampness on the rear differential and a drop or two of the red stuff near the output shaft. A driveshaft loop is in place and of course, traction bars accompany leaf springs in back while the front has coil springs. Dual exhaust runs from the headers to FlowMaster muffler, then straight out back through steel pipes. No catalytic converter is present.

Drive-Ability
The 350 turns over and offers a raucous exhaust note and with each flick of the gas pedal, the exhaust responds accordingly. It's visceral, pleasantly loud, and connected closely with the impressive acceleration offered up by the V8. The A/C compressor was removed and comes with the car so obviously does not blow cold in the cabin. Beyond that, all functions on board operate as they should and we circle back to the mall. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This model of the late 70's is actually an ode to the 80's, when young people got ahold of 70's F-bodies and followed the trends of Cragars, B&M shifters, and the ever present traction bars. We didn't always have the horsepower to back up those mods, but this car absolutely does. It checks all the boxes for some throwback good times, and this fountain of youth wears a sun colored suit.
