Vehicle Description
1965 Pontiac LeMans Convertible
"Be it a Tempest, Tempest Custom, LeMans, or GTO, the 1965 Pontiac
A-body is considered a styling triumph among fans of the marque.
Its new front end with stacked headlamps was contemporary, as was
the revised rear with a wraparound tail lamp treatment and the one
year old brawny body design. For 1965, the LeMans was offered on
the two door post coupe, hardtop, and convertible as it had been in
1964. New to the lineup, however, was the LeMans four door sedan."

For consignment, a 1965 Pontiac LeMans convertible showing 4,579
miles, but the true miles are unknown. This is a restored and fully
built LeMans, now wearing GTO badging. This car was featured in the
September 2012 issue of Pontiac High Performance Magazine and comes
with PHS documentation.
Exterior
The stacked headlamps and recessed split grille concept that made
the 1965 full size Pontiacs so admired was expertly integrated into
the LeMans and GTO. An upscale horizontal ribbed trim piece that
integrates the tail lights and a hugging rear bumper frames this
car very nicely. Long flat side panels are era typical, but the
hood scoop and GTO emblems demonstrate the sporty nature of the
car, a tribute to its high performance brethren. Two stage Mayfair
Maize is the color of choice here and it's a good one, nicely
offset by black features and chrome trimmings and accentuated by
the 15-inch Pontiac Rally wheels with staggered sized redline tires
with a mid-2022 date code. The white canvas roof is newer and in
great shape, just as the rest of the exterior. Metalwork and paint
are fantastic on the car and we could not find any glaring exterior
imperfections.
Interior
With white vinyl door panels that have some concentric descending
square stitched panels, shiny cranks and actuators, we are met with
the first indication of a clean interior. Very nice white vinyl
buckets are in front and a rear bench in similar condition resides
in the back, all with diagonal ribs in the inserts and an embossed
Pontiac arrowhead in the upper backs of all the chairs. Up front,
what you first notice is that the ribbed panel from the back of the
car is mirrored in the mid dash and on the center console where the
robust Hurst shifter rises from an offset cove, topped by a white
ball. The ignition port has been replaced with a push button start,
an updated and attractive steering wheel presents to the driver,
and a spun aluminum backed instrument cluster houses ivory colored
AutoMeter vintage series gauges with chrome rings. A handle is
provided in front for the passenger and a vacuum gauge lives on the
console and everything described above is fresh and clean. Black
loop carpet floods the floor and speakers in the footwells play off
your phone. The trunk is clean and finished and contains
subwoofers, an amplifier and a covered spare.
Drivetrain
If you're not already sold by the spotless exterior, this might do
it! Sure, the engine presents cleanly with polished parts and a
blue block. But it's what's on the inside that's just as
impressive. This Jim Taylor built 455ci has been bord .035 over,
has Pro Gram 4 bolt main caps, Crower forged rods, SRP full
floating flat top pistons, Hastings plasma moly rings, and a Crane
solid roller cam. The heads are 6X with bronze guides, Ferra
stainless valves, ported to flow 240cfm, Crower dual valve springs
and Smith Brothers pushrods. The dual Edelbrock 500cfm carburetors
sit atop an Offenhauser intake while the Tremec 3550 5-speed
contains a Centerforce dual friction clutch and flywheel. Power is
routed to the 12 bolt Eaton TrueTrac rear differential with Moser
33-spline axles. Wilwood brakes are onboard to supply the power
discs at all four wheels, slotted and drilled for good measure!
Undercarriage
As expected, perfectly clean underneath. Here, the Doug's ceramic
coated 1.75" headers lead to 3" collectors, then to cut outs, then
to Pypes mufflers, finally terminating with bevel cut steel pipes
behind the fenders. Global West suspension includes coil springs up
front which have been lowered 1" and a 4 link with coil springs in
back, with a 1/2 " drop.
Drive-Ability
This special Pontiac proves its worth on the test track where it
not only looks amazing, but performs well with gobs of power, great
sound, and crisp handling. This is the complete package and there's
not much more to add. Other than the reverse lights, all functions
onboard operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
We never let envy shape our view of customers, but damn, it's going
to be one lucky dude, (or dudette), who takes this beauty home. As
they say, "you couldn't build it for that price" and that's the
truth here. This is an absolutely stunning show car and if you
don't have a garage, call a contractor because it's worth building
one for this car. Add climate control, proper lighting, and shelf
space for your future trophies.
