Vehicle Description
1977 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
The 1977 Corvette was no longer badged with the "Sting Ray" script.
Some early production 1977 Corvettes were still built with orange
painted engines, but most have the new blue engines. A new crossed
flag badge adorned the front of the hood between the headlights as
well as on the fuel filler door. The glass roof panels that were
announced this year were never delivered on a production car and
the 500,000th Corvette rolled off the line this year.
For consignment, a 1977 Chevrolet Corvette coupe showing 73,122
miles, but the true miles are unknown. Lots of work went into
refurbishing this car including a rebuild of a 454ci and new things
from door gaskets, leather seats, to exhaust, center caps, and
brake lines.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
Repainted about six years ago, the car is dressed for a night out
on the town in two stage Black and new tail light lenses pop with
color in back, taking in the reverse light on the inboard circles
while downturned tailpipes peek out from under the bumper cover.
The refurbished 15-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels now wear new center
caps and 225/70R15 tires with a late 2020 date code. The crossed
flag emblem on the nose is magnified by its appearance on the front
plate, both of which lead your eyes to the slightly cowled hood
between rounded fenders, part of the coke bottle profile that's
been compared to the feminine form consciously and unconsciously.
Rocker panel trim creates some contrast and visual interest and the
car has a slight rake to its stance. The paint is excellent and
only some flex cracks and scratches on the front bumper cover make
our list of imperfections.
Interior
Are we going black on black? Yes! The inside starts with black door
panels with polished trim pieces and both doors present cleanly.
The black leather seats are newer and in showroom condition and a
matching armrest fits in between. A three spoke steering wheel
fronts the two gauge instrument panel and five other gauges,
including a clock, are in the center stack, showing just a touch of
patina. The center console is clean and houses a Hurst shifter and
electric window switches, all over newer black carpet that also
neatly covers the rear cargo area. Our consignor notes that sound
deadening has been added to the entire interior.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a new hood insulator and a rebuilt 454ci V8 with
new pistons, rods, bearings and oil pump. It's topped by a Holley
650cfm 4-barrel carburetor and mated to a rebuilt T10 4-speed
manual transmission sending power to the rebuilt rear with 3.08
gears and Positraction. Newer brake lines augment the four wheel
power disc brakes. A new heater core, radiator, and electric fan
have been added.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath with minimal surface rust and no errant fluids
visible. The driveshaft and half shafts have been rebuilt and new
U-joints added. The dual exhaust comes off of headers and travels
to Borla Atak mufflers before exiting via downturned exhaust tips.
There is no catalytic converter present. Coil springs are up front
for suspension and the rear is Corvette's complex system of a frame
mounted differential, tubular axle drive shafts, transverse strut
rods, torque control arms, and transverse leaf spring.
Drive-Ability
The new seats provide a comfortable perch as we crank the 454 to
life and everyone in the mall knows it. We roll out onto the test
loop where obvious power is on hand, wonderful handling through
turns, and straight tracking as the pointed nose forges ahead. We
note the front tires rubbing on tighter turns and the horn, heater
blower, tachometer, and reverse lights are not working. All other
operating items function as they should on this black beauty. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
In all our years of business, only eleven 1977 Corvettes have
graced our halls and a good percentage of them were Tan Buckskin
colored. This black edition has all the upgrades you're going to
need for a while and will likely provide years of road going
enjoyment. T-tops add to the fun because you can have an open air
experience without the entire top coming off. If your bingo card
contains C3, this one is worthy of a closer look.
