Only 1,377Pontiac Lemans Can Ams were ever produced! And, only 300
are estimated to still exist. Currently, there are no Can Am's for
sale anywhere in the world. None listed for sale on any
platform.
Each Can Am was hand-finished by Motortown Corporation in Michigan,
and all featured a distinctive appearance package and exclusive
performance upgrades!
Only available in 1977 and built off the LeMans Sport Coupe, the
Can Am combined Trans Am performance with G-body comfort in one of
Pontiac's rarest muscle cars of the era.
In 1977, Pontiac wanted to bring back some excitement to its lineup
using the LeMans coupe as a base. They teamed up with Motortown
Corporation, a specialty shop, to create the Can Am package. Each
car started life as a LeMans with the sporty Grand Am nose and then
went through customization. They all came in Cameo White with bold
orange, red, and yellow striping inspired by Pontiac's Trans Am
graphics. To complete the look, they added a shaker-style hood
scoop (borrowed from the Trans Am) and special "Can Am" callouts on
the fenders, trunk, and dash.
Under the hood, most Can Ams were powered by Pontiac's
400-cubic-inch V8 making around 200 net horsepower (which was
healthy for the late '70s). A very small handful, mostly for
California emissions, came with the Oldsmobile-built 403 V8. Buyers
could choose an automatic transmission and often ordered options
like air conditioning, rally gauges, and a sport steering wheel.
The suspension was tuned for better handling than a standard
LeMans, and the car came with body-color Rally II wheels that set
it apart.
Pontiac took deposits from customers for 5,000 Can Ams, but
production stopped early, only around 1,377 were made, and all the
deposits were returned to the customers. The reason? A strike and
supply issues at the plant combined with some tooling problems for
the unique spoiler and shaker setup. Because of that short run, the
1977 Can Am has become a very collectible muscle car oddball in
Pontiac's history. It's basically a sleeper muscle car from the
disco era, and today enthusiasts love it because it blends
late-'70s style with real Pontiac performance and extreme rarity.
Today, from a simple internet search you can learn that only 300
are believed to exist.
