Vehicle Description
1970 Buick Skylark Custom Convertible
The second generation Buick Skylarks were produced from 1968 to
1972 and were a wildly popular A-body car that was produced in huge
numbers. It was basic transportation and was available as a two
door coupe, convertible, and four door sedan. You could get a
painted hardtop or seemingly more common for the period, the vinyl
roof. But like Ford, Chevy, Oldsmobile, Dodge at the time, Buick
offered its own spicy mix in the form of the Gran Sport line, and
at the top of the heap, the GSX.
For consignment, a 1970 Buick Skylark Custom convertible with a
title verified 47,527 actual miles. This topless red ride was the
beneficiary of a full restoration in 2013 and now has an electronic
distributor, auxiliary fan, and new tires.
Exterior
Code 75, Fire Red, is bathing the straight steel on this coke
bottle designed car. Dual headlights and an egg crate grille lead
us off and a shiny bumper below has inset turn signal lights. Some
thin stainless trimming can be seen edging the wheel wells and a
wider piece for the rockers. A newer convertible top, in
contrasting and correct white, is looking in very good condition
and sports a glass rear window. We note mirror polished stainless
trimmings around the glass and passenger compartment to accentuate
the quality of the restoration nicely. Within the rear bumper are
horizontal tail lights and the bumper wraps around the rear
quarters. Nice badging and chrome laden 14-inch Buick rally wheels
that are wrapped by 235/60R14's with a late 2023 date code. The
paint and metalwork shows very nicely with a deep reflective
finish, and one paint chip is the sole imperfection we find.
Interior
A swing of the door and our eyes directly focus on all of the new
Pearl White vinyl with various textures covering the door panels.
These panels are newer and show as such with bright and shiny
chrome,a perfect padded armrest, and flawless badging. A nicely
stuffed split bench with folding armrest and the matching rear
bench present cleanly in white vinyl while the standard black
rimmed Buick steering wheel fronts a black molded plastic dash that
houses the square bezel round insert instruments. Below is a band
of walnut applique that houses the heater slides along with some
knobs and pulls. A GM Delco AM/FM radio is in the center of the
dash and a trio of added gauges hangs below. This dash shows no
wear and the same can be said for the black carpeting on the floor
left open by the column mounted shifter. Our trunk is also clean
and has a vinyl mat and matching spare cover.
Drivetrain
Under the hood resides a clean and rebuilt 350ci V8 with a newer
4-barrel carburetor on top and the ignition is now electronic, but
the original distributor is included. It's mated to a TH350 3-speed
automatic that hands off power to a 10 bolt 2.73 rear axle. Power
drum brakes are found at all four wheels.
Undercarriage
Attention to detail was definitelypaid during the redux and it
continues on the underside where we are met with miles of black
paintedsteel. The frame, flooring, rockers and body supports are
all structurally sound and we note in the areas of paint chip off
the factory primer is showing through. Dual exhaust with stock
style flow to newer chrome tips. Independent coil sprung front
suspension and a 4 link with coil springs in back is providing the
smooth ride. We note a few drops of oil on the flywheel cover.
Drive-Ability
We set forth in this bright red car and it simply does everything
well. Plenty of power from the V8, nice visibility with the top up
and we can imagine even better with it stowed! The newer 60 series
tires that are wider than what would have been stock provide a sure
footed ride that tracks straight and handles well. The clock does
not work but all other functions operate as they should. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
A-body fun with the potential of sun. Classic convertibles are
pretty strong sellers and this well sorted beauty out of the Flint,
Michigan plant has so many positive points, we know the next owners
will be over the moon with their purchase, and under the stars!
Space-X may be the next wave in intergalactic travel, but this
Skylark is our choice for skygazing!
